The beauty of the far north - from above!

I’ve always been fascinated by aerial photography. It gives me the possibility to see landscape that, from the ground, are difficult to access.

During my aerial shooting I had the opportunity to try the EOS-1D X Mark II and the EF24-105mm f/4L IS II USM lens. I was really impressed with the quality of the images and the superb dynamic range.

Usually in all my cameras I change the picture style to "Neutral" to get optimum image quality during the image processing but I can say the images looked already great. But my real love was the high ISO performance: no grain and noise! This means that I didn’t sacrifice the aperture or the speed, very important when you take aerial images.

The EOS-1D X Mark II was very responsive: fast capture and fast writing to card. I also loved the autofocus for its accuracy and speed.

The EF24-105mm f/4L IS II USM lens worked extremely well. It can cover a large zoom area ranging from 24mm wide-angle to 105mm, so I didn’t have to lose time changing the lens during the flight. The Image Stabilizer technology helped me a lot when the flight shook too much because of the wind.

A FEW BASICS OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY:
• Camera setting depending on the scene luminosity, ranged from f/4 to f/8; Shutter speed ranged from 1/1000sec to 1/2000sec.
• ISO ranged from 800 to 1600. Have a full battery and a clear memory card.
• I strongly suggest to shoot more images and have everything set up before take off. Helicopter and small airplanes can be very expensive so it is better to not lose one single image.
• Don’t put your lens against the window pane of the airplane, otherwise the camera will shake due to the vibration of the plane. Usually I dress with black clothes to avoid coloured reflections in the window.
