Sunday morning footballBy Eddie Keogh, Monday March 06, 2017
Last year I found myself telling a lot of aspiring sports photographers that they didn't need to go to Premier League games to practice their photography skills and get cool pictures. “Get down to your local park and shoot some Sunday morning football. Good pictures are everywhere, you just need to get out there and spend some time working at it.”
So I figured that I needed to back up my fine words and get myself out there to prove it, so I took the opportunity to visit Hackney Marshes in London for a morning before I went to a game at West Ham United. I had played Sunday morning football like many to a very average level so there was something nice about getting back out there, even if I was only as an observer. It was such an enjoyable experience and so refreshing after shooting top level football that I decided to go back a few more times and work on it as a private project. I visited other Sunday morning games in north London, Southampton and Oxfordshire where I live and I’m happy to say that last week the set won Highly Commended in the Specialist Sports Portfolio section of the Sports Journalist Awards for 2016.
Alex Livesey of Getty Images won Sports Photographer of the Year with an excellent portfolio all shot with Canon cameras.
