Biography

Martin Eisenhawer

Martin Eisenhawer is a German photographer who is now based in Switzerland, and is the current president of the German Association for Wildlife Photographers (GDT). His interest in photography dates back to his teenage years when he got his first SLR camera and was encouraged to take photographs of animals by his biology teacher father.

He originally trained as a biochemist and switched careers to become a freelance wildlife photographer in the year 2000. In 2005 Martin achieved his first major breakthrough by winning two category prizes in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition for 2005, organised by London’s Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine. ‘Crane snow flight’ won the Gerald Durrell Award for Endangered Wildlife and ‘Whooper swans at dawn’ won the Animals in their Environment category. He followed it up with two more awards in the European Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition in 2006.

He has also staged several exhibitions of his work across Europe and regularly sits on wildlife photography competition juries. In recent years his approach has been as much that of an art photographer as it has been of a wildlife photographer. His works have sparked interest from art galleries and book publishers, both of which, he insists, do not see any conflict between art and wildlife image making.
