Shooting from a new perspective: with the 11-24mm lens

With the introduction of the world’s widest angle rectilinear lens, Canon added a new dimension to wide-angle photography. The 11-24mm zoom lens not only convinces with its field-of-view but also with its design construction. For photographers like me, who are working mainly outdoors and often under extreme circumstances, the seal which saves the delicate lens from dust and humidity is another big advantage.

I was lucky to have perfect conditions to explore the mountains to see if the lens keeps its promises. My sister was visiting from Spain and it seemed a suitable opportunity to try it out. She had never been in the mountains in summer before and she discovered a whole new world. As did I! The wide-angle lens literally opens up new perspectives and views, particularly in combination with the high-resolution EOS 5DS R – previously unimaginable new opportunities, especially in landscape photography, are created.

The spacial depth effect and a diagonal picture angle of 126,5-84° makes the viewer feel like they are actually part of a situation. Nevertheless, it’s important to know how to use the super wide-angle lens: A wider angle also means more details and elements, which can quickly lead to a cluttered and overloaded image. If you don’t want your photo to appear as a snapshot, it’s important to concentrate on one specific thing or object. You need to be clear about what you want to show.

While shooting with the wide-angle lens, the positioning of the camera is also very important. Only a few inches can be the crucial difference between a very good or just a reasonable shot. I was surprised by the sharpness, even in the corners, and also the edges of the pictures. With the so called Super-UD glass, Canon solved the problem of light dispersion which causes unsharpness. And even with an angle of 11mm, details were pictured precisely.

To fully exploit the potential, anyone using the EF11-14mm f/4L USM should definitely not be shy of getting too close. It is only if you get in contact with your object very closely that you’ll discover its true potential. For the picture of the cow I almost kissed it, I was so close!

This closeness to the photographed object not only guarantees a new and interesting perspective, but also avoids empty and insignificant sections in the edges of the images. Although if the lens convinces with it’s low perspective distortion, it’s important to be vigilant about the positioning of a person as possible. If you want the person to look natural, you should place him or her as centred as possible.

The summer day in the mountains opened new perspectives to my sister and to me as well: with the EF11-24mm f/4L USM lens I was able to see a familiar environment from an unusual and very interesting point of view.

Photographing with a ultra wide-angle lens, the trick is to get as close to the subject as possible and sometimes, you might get a kiss for it... or was the cow trying to be helpful by cleaning my lens?

A perfect day in the mountains concluded with a perfect sunset at Lake Starnberg and a perfect combination of the 11-24mm lens and EOS 5DS R captured the beauty.
