Firmware: Updating firmware

You will find the latest firmware update downloads and full installation details on the canon website.

Firmware updating is a very simple operation, but there are certain precautions you need to follow to do it successfully. Ensure you either have means to plug the camera into a power socket, or you have a fresh, fully charged battery in the camera. You will also need a CompactFlash card that you are happy to format and lose all data from.

1. Check your current firmware version. Press the Menu button and find the “Firmware ver” tag. Compare the firmware on the camera with the latest listed on the Canon website. If you already have the latest software, you don’t need to do anything!

2. Download the firmware update file from the Canon website to your computer. If you are using a Windows PC, you will need to extract or unzip the downloaded file. If you are using an Apple Mac, it should self-extract.

3. Compare the file size of the extracted file size with the file size listed on the Canon website. If there is any variation, re-download the file until the sizes match. Put a CompactFlash card in the camera and format the card so it is devoid of data or images.

4. Remove the CompactFlash card from the camera and put it in a card reader, attached to the computer.

5. Copy the firmware update to the root directory (top level) of the CompactFlash card. After copying, browse the contents of the card. You should see a folder called DCIM with the firmware update file sitting alongside it. Eject the card from the computer and put it back into the camera.

6. Connect the camera to the mains converter for power or use a freshly charged battery. Turn the camera on. (Power loss during updating may disable the camera.) Find the Firmware version section in the Menu. Select it, and you will be able to see the current firmware version.

7. Once the firmware update program has loaded on the camera, select the firmware version you want to update to.

8. Click ‘OK’ and you will be asked if you want to update the firmware. Select ‘Yes’.

9. During the update process you will see a progress bar. Make sure you do not touch any buttons or dials while the bar is visible.

10. Once the update program is complete, there will be a message on the screen telling you so.

11. Turn on the camera, enter the Menu and check the firmware has updated.

Important

These are general instructions to give you an idea of the updating process. The web page from which you download the update will have detailed instructions specific to your camera. Make sure you read and follow these instructions carefully.

EOS 30D

If you use an EOS 30D, then you have two ways to update your firmware. You can use the procedure described, or you can connect the camera to the computer with a USB cable and then use EOS Utility to update the firmware. There are full instructions on the Canon EOS 30D firmware update page on how to do this.
