PowerShot G1 X on film: photojournalist Gary Knight on Canon’s flagship compact
In the first ever film about Canon’s revolutionary large sensor PowerShot G1 X digital compact camera, Canon Ambassador, and top photojournalist, Gary Knight (VII) gives his initial thoughts on using the new camera and identifies what he feels are its key features.
The PowerShot G1 X has a large Canon CMOS sensor, a DIGIC 5 image processor, and a 4x optical zoom lens with a 4-stop Image Stabilizer to deliver SLR levels of control and the best image quality ever seen in a Canon compact. Gary Knight reveals: “The G1 X is a compact camera that has the sort of quality I would expect from an SLR: it’s way beyond the normal evolution of a compact camera. Having this kind of sensor in a compact camera is a huge step forward.”
Knight adds: “The 14-bit RAW files that the G1 X produces are critically important – that allows me an enormous amount of post-production control.”
Commenting on the quality of the PowerShot G1 X’s lens, which has a 28-112mm zoom range, Knight notes: “The single most important thing about this camera is its lens, the optical quality of the lens. It’s the sharpness of the glass; that’s what Canon are famous for and that’s what they’ve put in this compact camera.”
Talking about his personal workflow Gary Knight says: “The increased image resolution in this camera gives me limitless potential to make large prints, which is something I do frequently to hang in museums or galleries. Any limitations that any compact camera had are now redundant. The files that are coming out of this camera are beautiful; more beautiful than anything I’ve seen out of a compact camera before.”
High performance CMOS sensor
The film also features Canon Europe’s Richard Trestain, who explains: “This is Canon’s first compact camera with a large, high performance Canon CMOS sensor for outstanding image quality and control which has only really been previously possible in our DSLR cameras.”
Trestain adds: “It incorporates technology and expertise that Canon has developed through the EOS range that’s trusted by professionals around the world. The sensor, in combination with the new DIGIC 5 processor delivers stunning detail, high dynamic range and high sensitivity up to ISO 12,800.”
Gary Knight notes: “The higher ISO range gives me the ability to work in more situations; in different situations. It enables me to tell the story in different ways; it enables me to work in different places; to go on for longer; it increases my [picture taking] potential.”
