When you work with an artist of the stature of Tiësto you're always prepared to go 'the extra mile' because you know that everybody in the world is going to see what you shoot. I always want to deliver the best content I can... and shooting with the Canon XF300 I know that that's going to happen.
I saw the announcement for the XF305 and XF300 cameras earlier in 2010 and I just wanted to have one of the camcorders. I covered Tiësto's 2010 summer and I wanted the XF300 for that.
It's one of Canon's first file-based camcorders and its MPEG-2 codec is so good. It gives you 4:2:2 chroma sub-sampling, which means you have so many more colours to play with. The Tiësto show is incredibly vibrant and uses an LED background - the graphics on that are really colourful. With the XF300 I can display the full, and real, potential of all those colours. The camcorder gives me many more opportunities to get the best image and colour.

I only have one XF300 at the moment but as soon as I get the opportunity I'm switching to the XF300 for all of the camcorders that my company, We Are The Night, uses. I think the form factor is actually better than other cameras. It gives you more balance; the grip is really nice and it's easy to use.
When you're filming dance music events you often can't predict what's going to happen; you can't predict the lights or the crowd, but with the XF300 I can react quickly. I also like the standby function - it's great having a dedicated button to put the XF300 on standby.
What surprised me the most about the XF300 was the high quality of the L-series lens. At the standard setting it's really already a wideangle, and that's especially useful for what I do. Even though Tiësto can play in huge venues, I'm not always shooting in big spaces. Often I'm filming in the DJ booth and it is small, really small. I've also found that if you use the Canon WA-H82 wideangle attachment with the XF300 you get great images and no vignetting. It's just wonderful.
The pace and rhythm of the music Tiësto plays affects the way that I film and I find I'm guided by the work - the same way the artists I shoot for are. If Tiësto goes into a really 'wild' number then I try to adapt the footage; I shoot to that style. I will try shooting more close-ups, switching from people to people, face to face. I've found myself using the XF300's wide range of frame rate settings a lot; especially slow motion mode - it gives the shots a lot more emotion.
I did have to change my workflow a little bit with the XF300 - my weekly trip to buy tapes is over! Now that we use CompactFlash cards for the XF300 I've installed NAS (Network-attached storage) in order to get everything stored and backed up. This means we can access our footage quickly, too.
I enjoy what I do. I really love dance music - it's also a lifestyle - and I feel honoured that people employ me to travel around the word and cover their shows. The XF300 helps me to shoot these shows so well.
