When it comes to sharpening images, there is a “dark art” to getting it just right. In Canon’s Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software there was always been a sharpening option, but this has recently been improved. In the latest version of DPP – Version 3.9.2 released with the EOS 60D DSLR and available to download from the Canon Europe website – in the RAW tab there is now the option for sharpening (as before) or ‘Unsharp Mask’ (as found in third party image editing software). This gives you much greater control over the sharpening level and how it is applied, making it easier to sharpen your images appropriately. To access it, ensure you have the latest version of DPP and then, in the RAW tab of ‘Edit Image Window’, choose ‘Unsharp Mask’ from the drop down menu at the bottom of the Picture Style parameters section. This changes the sharpening options to three possible settings: Strength, Fineness and Threshold.
