When using flash with your EOS DSLR – either via the camera’s built-in flash or with an external Speedlite flashgun – pressing the ‘Star’ (AE Lock) button on the EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 7D or EOS 60D DSLRs, or the dedicated Flash Exposure Lock (FEL) button on EOS-1 series DSLRs will perform a Flash Exposure Lock. This means the flash is pre-fired and a spot reading of the flash exposure is taken from the middle of the frame. It is very useful for tricky flash subjects. When using FEL you may sometimes see the flash icon blinking in the camera’s viewfinder. The blinking icon indicates the fact that the subject is beyond the effective range of the flash, so you should either set a wider aperture or move closer to the subject and take a new reading. This warning is most likely to occur when using the camera’s built-in flash as that has a lower flash power output than an external Speedlite.
