Photographers and filmmakers in the UK now have until 22 November 2010 to enter their videos in a new competition called the Open Shutter Awards, launched by the British Journal of Photography, in association with Canon. The deadline has been extended from 31 October 2010.
The Awards are open to all kinds of HD-DSLR films, from documentaries and commercial promos to creative films. The Awards mark the emergence of filmmaking using an HD-DSLR, such as the EOS 5D Mark II, and looks to reward those photographers and filmmakers who embrace the new convergence of technology to express their creativity and innovation beyond the still image.
Aimed at all UK-based photographers and film-makers, Open Shutter aims to encourage excellence in the fast-developing world of convergent image capture, recognising the best films and multimedia works shot on HD-DSLRs. The introduction of broadcast-quality HD video to the latest generation of DSLR cameras has democratised filmmaking, rendering movie capture truly affordable and opening new creative opportunities.
The Prize
An expert panel drawn from the world of professional film and photography will judge the entries and select a shortlist to be shown at an award ceremony in London in December 2010. The overall winner will receive an EOS-1D Mark IV and be featured in an interactive magazine and in BJP in early 2011.
How to enter
The judges will be looking in particular for films that make creative use of the new technology, or use it to tell stories that otherwise would have been too costly, or in which the camera would have been too intrusive, to deliver professional standard films.
Entrants should also demonstrate a good understanding of some or all of the following attributes: structure and narrative development, professional requirements for sound and editing, and evident technical ability. But above all, they are looking for credible and engaging films that can hold an audience for the length of the film.
All films should have been shot using a HD-DSLR camera produced by Canon or other manufacturers. They should be sent on a CD or DVD, with a completed form to: British Journal of Photography - Open Shutter, 32-34 Broadwick Street, W1A 2HG, London.
An entry form can be downloaded here. The competition is open to UK photographers only. Entry is free.
The judges
Nicholas Barker:
Multi-award-winning commercials director Nicholas Barker made his breakthrough with two acclaimed BBC documentaries in the early 1990s, Signs of the Times and From A to B (collaborating with Martin Parr on two accompanying books), before making his first film for cinema, 'Unmade Beds', which collected Best Feature at the Stockholm International Film Festival. He's since created some of the funniest ads of the last decade, including a Cannes Lion winning spot for Carte d'Or, and has just made a short experimental film using a Canon EOS 7D.
Dominique Green:
Combining a career in film and photography, Dominique Green is managing director of the award-winning charity PhotoVoice, and acts as a delegate and UK ambassador to the Berlin Film Festival. Previously she was the MD of Magnum Photos London, having worked 14 years in the French film industry, where she was head of Co-Productions at TF1 and Studio Canal+.
Brian Griffin:
One of the world's most influential portrait photographers, Brian Griffin switched to filmmaking in the 1990s, directing commercials, music videos and experimental films, before returning to stills at the beginning of the decade. He recently completed a London Olympics commission, funded by the National Portrait Gallery and the telecoms giant BT, and this autumn has large-scale retrospectives on show in Birmingham and Paris.
The ceremony
The winner will be announced in a high-profile ceremony, attended by photographers, editors and filmmakers, in central London in early December 2010. Parts or all of the winner's film will be shown alongside a selection of the best entries.
