Join the race for the Canon AFJ Award

The French Association of Women Journalists (AFJ) and Canon France are launching, with Images Evidence, the eighth Canon Female Photojournalist Award.

The Award is open to professional women photojournalists of any age and nationality and is supported by Le Figaro Magazine. It is presented every year during the Visa pour l’Image Festival in Perpignan, France. Canon France grants the winning photographer €8,000 to help her complete a photojournalistic project.

The winner will be selected by a jury made up of photography and press professionals, as well as members of the AFJ. Applicants will be judged on the presentation of their projects and their previous work. Among the selection criteria are the quality of the photographs, as well as the journalistic thoughts and relevance of the chosen subject.

The winner will produce an ongoing, one-year project leading to an exhibition or screening at Visa pour l’Image in 2009. French photographer Axelle de Russé won last year’s award for her project reporting on the reappearance of concubines in China. Other past winners include Ami Vitale and Veronique de Viguerie. Some of the latter's winning work from 2006 will be shown at an exhibition at Galerie Cosmos in Paris from 24 June.
