World Press Photo (WPPh) has announced that David Burnett, a founder member of Contact Press Images and a freelancer for Time magazine since the 1960s, will chair the 2011 World Press Photo Contest jury.
The annual competition is the largest press photography contest in the world and will be open for entries starting on 1 December 2010 for all press photographers and photojournalists around the world.
The deadline for submissions is 13 January 2011, 23.59 Central European Time (CET). Entries may only be submitted online via the WPPh web entry site. A user name and password are required to enter and may be requested from 1 December 2010 onwards. The deadline for requesting a user name and password is 7 January 2011, 23.59 CET.
David Burnett's work for news magazines in Europe and the USA has included politics, sports and portraiture, as well as news. His awards include Magazine Photographer of the Year from the Pictures of the Year Competition, the World Press Photo of the Year 1980 and the Robert Capa Gold Medal from the Overseas Press Club. Burnett also chaired the World Press Photo jury in 1999. The complete jury is due to be revealed soon. An international jury of leading professionals in the field of photojournalism worldwide will be judging the entries at the World Press Photo office in Amsterdam from 29 January until 10 February 2011. The results will be announced at 11 AM (CET) on 11 February in a press conference at the Amsterdam City Hall and online at www.worldpressphoto.org.
The prize-winning pictures will be presented in an exhibition that will travel to approximately 100 cities in 45 countries, starting in Amsterdam at the end of April 2011. In addition, a yearbook published in six languages offers an insight into the winning pictures. In the 2010 contest, 5,847 photographers from 128 countries participated submitting a total of 101,960 photographs.
