EOS 650D DSLR
with Touch Screen
Canon has unveiled the 18 Megapixel EOS 650D APS-C DSLR that includes AF movie shooting, Touch Screen LCD control, up to 5fps shooting, an ISO range of 100-12,800, and improved colour rendition with 14-bit DIGIC 5 processing.
The EOS 650D will be positioned above the EOS 600D in Canon’s DSLR range and it heralds two firsts within the EOS System – the first ever Canon DSLR to feature Touch Screen LCD technology and the first EOS camera to offer continuous AF whilst shooting movies (when using Canon’s new STM lenses).
18 Megapixel, high-resolution images
The EOS 650D’s 18 Megapixel APS-C sensor, with a magnification of 1.6x the focal length of the lens, captures images in stunning high resolution detail at a maximum size of 5184x3446 pixels. This allows for capturing and printing poster-size images in a variety of aspect ratios (3:2, 1:1, 16:9 and 4:3).
Canon’s powerful DIGIC 5 processor technology rapidly processes image information captured from the CMOS sensor’s output to provide outstanding colour reproduction, as well as high-speed shooting of full-resolution JPEGs at up to 5 frames per second, for up to 22 JPEGs in one shooting burst. The camera’s standard ISO range of 100-12,800 is expandable to ISO 25,600, providing smooth images with minimal noise in low light conditions.
The EOS 650D features Canon’s iFCL 63-zone Dual-Layer Metering Sensor – first seen in Canon’s acclaimed EOS 7D DSLR. Information on subject location is gathered from the autofocus system, and is combined with colour and luminance readings for consistently accurate exposures whatever the situation.
Improved autofocus system
The EOS 650D’s 9-point AF system boasts superior autofocus performance with all nine points cross-type focus points, allowing you to create sharply focused pictures with confidence – even in the trickiest situations. The introduction of AF in Live View provides photographers with improved focus accuracy, and ease and speed of use.
There are four ways to focus: Face Detection and Tracking, Flexi-Zone Single, Flexi-Zone Multi (which allows you to select one of nine zones on the LCD), and Quick Mode that lets you change the focus point by touching the LCD screen and dragging the highlighted square to where you want the lens to focus.
Vari-angle 7.7cm (3.0”) 3:2 ratio Clear View LCD II Touch
A first on any Canon DSLR, the EOS 650D’s 7.7cm (3.0”) 3:2 ratio Clear View LCD II screen, with 1,040,000 dots, offers Touch Screen control. Touch screen technology offers control over viewing images and movies with pinch to zoom, plus control of camera settings, and photographers can even fire the shutter with a touch of the LCD screen.
The LCD screen is articulated and rotates through 270 degrees, making it easy to get great shots from low or high angles. Clear View II technology enables the screen to perform better in direct sunlight making Live View composition a pleasure.
The surface of the LCD screen features a protective cover, which incorporates an anti-smudge coating to produce a clear LCD monitor.
EOS Movies: Full HD quality with Live View AF
Make your own EOS Movie in Full HD, thanks to the EOS 650D’s fully featured Movie function. Shooting like an expert has never been easier thanks to continuous AF and editable Video Snapshot modes.
Creative movie making is made even easier on the EOS 650D thanks to high-speed autofocus, on-screen editing and full stereo sound. Canon’s advances in Full HD Movies means the joy of creating a movie is exciting and easy to achieve.
Continuous AF when shooting movies is available when using Canon’s new stepping-motor (STM) lenses – the EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and the compact EF40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens – in Movie Servo AF mode. The EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens features a four-stop Dynamic Image Stabilizer that stabilises the camera, even when walking, for capturing shake-free movie footage. The EF40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens’ fast maximum aperture offers control over depth-of-field and the ability to shoot handheld in low light conditions, whilst a circular aperture diaphragm delivers high-quality bokeh.
Shooting in Movie Servo AF mode uses STM stepping-motor technology for smooth, quiet focusing when shooting video with compatible EOS DSLR cameras.
You can also enhance your Movie footage with Video Snapshot. Shoot a series of short videos up to eight seconds in length, edit them and play the album as a video slideshow in one movie file. The EOS 650D makes this easy and fun and the results give your movies pace and excitement with the look and feel of professionally edited footage.
The EOS 650D captures 1920x1080p Full HD video with a variety of user-selectable frame rates, including 30fps, 25fps and 24fps, as well as 720p video at 60fps and 50fps. For shooting movies using SD cards with Speed Class 6 or higher is recommended.
The EOS 650D has a new built-in stereo microphone in front of the hotshoe and the sound recording menu includes an attenuator to dampen sudden loud noises, plus an automatic wind cut filter.
For those who want to share images with friends and family, an integrated HDMI port is compatible with Consumer Electronics Control (HDMI-CEC), allowing video and images to be viewed on any compatible HD-ready TV and controlled via the TV remote.
Scene Intelligent Auto
Scene Intelligent Auto works in combination with the powerful DIGIC 5 processor to create stunning images by analysing each scene for the presence of movement, faces (in Live View), lighting, contrast and colour. Even the EOS 650D’s Auto Lighting Optimizer is fine-tuned according to dynamic range, so that highlights and shadows are recorded and reproduced perfectly.
A Basic + function makes it easy for photographers to add their own creative touch to images without worrying about changing settings. Photographers can add ambiance to a scene by shooting according to lighting and scene type, with Portrait, Landscape, Close-Up, Sport, Night Snapshot or Creative AUTO modes all available. Different effects can be achieved by shooting with Basic + enhancements such as Daylight, Cloudy or Sunset or pre-set Picture Styles that include Vivid, Soft, Warm or Monochrome.
The EOS 650D also includes two new modes that accessible via the camera’s mode dial – HDR Backlight Control and Handheld Night Scene.
HDR Backlight Control
In HDR Backlight Control mode you can achieve stunning results in backlit conditions. With the power of the DIGIC 5 processor, three continuous shots at different exposures are taken. The shots are under-, correctly and over- exposed and these are then combined to create an image having minimal loss of highlight detail and shadow detail – even in backlit conditions.
Handheld Night Scene
Handheld Night Scene mode allows the EOS 650D to shoot a series of pictures in very low light at a fast enough shutter speed to prevent camera shake, blending them together to create one stunning result, thus eliminating the need for a tripod.
For photographers who want to add post-production effects to their images, without the need for expensive software, the EOS 650D incorporates a range of in-camera Creative Filters. These include the new Art Bold and Water Painting Effect filters, whilst the other creative filters are Fish-eye Effect, Grainy B/W, Soft Focus, Toy Camera Effect and Miniature Effect to provide images with a different feel. This also allows photographers to create a themed collection – for example, using Grainy B/W to give images a reportage style, or to easily smooth skin tones in portraits with Soft Focus.
Integrated Speedlite Transmitter
First seen in the EOS 7D, the EOS 650D’s Integrated Speedlite Transmitter provides in-camera control of multiple Canon Speedlite EX flashgun units for more creative lighting options. This allows photographers to add additional Speedlite flashguns triggered remotely by the camera, with no need for any cables or complications. Position another compatible Speedlite to one side for dramatic side lighting or use more than one flash placed in different areas to light subject and background independently.
The EOS 650D incorporates a dedicated Feature Guide that displays a simple description or advice for each function. It is displayed in each shooting mode, during Mode Dial operations, and for Quick Control screen functions. For example Av (aperture priority) mode is described as ’Adjust aperture to blur backgnd (subjects stand out) or keep foreground and backgnd in focus’.
Resizing and rating images
The EOS 650D allows for in-camera resizing of JPEG images and image recording capabilities are the same as the EOS 600D – Large JPEG, Medium JPEG, S1 JPEG, S2 JPEG, S3 JPEG, RAW, M-RAW and S-RAW.
For better management of larger image libraries with the EOS 650D photographers can add a rating of 1 to 5 to their favourite images, allowing them to be easily located and viewed on-screen. Once transferred from the camera to a computer, the tags can also be viewed using a number of image editing and management programs, including Canon’s Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software.
Designed for flexibility
The EOS 650D combines an ergonomically enhanced, curved shape with an intuitive button and dial layout that makes it quick and comfortable for photographers to change settings. The grip has been designed to be comfortable and frequently used camera controls are clustered on the right hand side of the top plate.
The camera offers eight Custom Functions with a range of customisable settings so you can tailor the camera to your exact needs.
The EOS 650D supports SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards and is compatible with the new UHS-I SD cards and high capacity SDXC cards. The camera is capable of writing at speeds on a par with Class 10 cards.
Although the EOS 650D doesn’t have a dedicated WFT WiFi Transmitter it has added extra compatibility with Eye-Fi cards (SD cards with built-in wireless transmitters) that allows users to send images wirelessly and check the status of the card within the camera.
