Sports Illustrated's Photography Editor James K. Colton has selected his favourite sports images from the thousands submitted to Editor's Choice 2 in July by CPN readers around the world.
In a multimedia presentation Colton chooses 36 pictures and talks in detail about his favourite 10 images. He also gives guidance to photographers on what makes a great sports image and what Sports Illustrated, one of the world's leading sports publications, is looking for when it chooses photography.
Colton told CPN that he spends around four to five hours a day reviewing the 250,000 or so images that arrive on his computer every week at Sport Illustrated. He called the images that CPN readers submitted "dynamic and diverse" - everything from well-lit and stylised portraiture to action shots and photo illustration. In the presentation he advises photographers about the use of post-production techniques, such as Photoshop, and goes into detail about what he calls the basic principles of sports photography: content, composition and colour.
Editor's Choice links photographers with the world's best photo editors. It allows CPN readers to have their work seen at the highest level and gives editors the chance to see new talent from around the world. Editor's Choice 2 follows the success of the first edition of Editor's Choice last year, in which more than 11,000 images were entered. Photographers using Canon cameras are able to upload their images for review by a leading picture editor. A different genre of photography is covered each month. For July, the category was sports photography; this month it's photojournalism and documentary photography, and Daphné Anglès from the New York Times is on hand to review your images - you can upload your pictures until 31 August. The category for September is travel, landscape and architecture.
James K. Colton and CPN would like to thank all of those photographers who submitted their images to Editor's Choice 2.
