Award-winning female photojournalist shows Afghanistan images in Paris

An exhibition of images entitled ‘Afghanistan, Inch’Allah?’ - shot by the winner of the 2006 AFJ/Canon Female Photojournalist Award, Veronique de Viguerie - will be exhibited at the Galerie Cosmos in Paris from 2 July until 10 August 2008.

De Viguerie has lived, worked and travelled extensively in Afghanistan. In the south of the country the Taliban has a growing influence and is moving towards imposing a system of power to depose the current one, with the situation becoming more and more fragile. British forces have had to withdraw from certain districts, abandoning locals to the hands of the rebel forces.

In these southern areas of the country the population, wearied of the chaos and disappointed by a government that delays fulfilling its promises, has sided with the fighters. The principal victims of the Taliban are women. In 2007, more than 20 professors were murdered, 198 schools were burned, and several dozen women went missing.

There have been some attempts to fight back against this discrimination with female officer Malalai Kakar and her 17 women police officers criss-crossing the Kandahar region to stalk the criminals and protect their 'sisters'. Veronica de Viguerie’s exhibition documents the changing face of the southern region of Afghanistan. To find out more click here.
