EOS 5D Mark II seminars explain how to get the most from Full HD video
Eager photographers packed into the Oude Kerk in central Amsterdam – venue for the main World Press Photo exhibition – for a special free-to-enter ‘LightsCameraAction!’ seminar on 19 May to inspire and motivate them about the new imaging possibilities that are available by using the still and Full HD video capabilities of the EOS 5D Mark II DSLR.
The event – organised in conjunction with Apple, Calumet and the NDIF – began with Dutch photojournalist Geert van Kesteren (author of the book ‘Baghdad Calling’ and recent winner of the ICP Infinity Award 2009) delivering a lecture on the increasing role of moving image in the world of the photography.
Former advertising photographer and well-known maker of TV commercials Thed Lenssen described the combination of stills and video image language as “a moving photograph,” whilst photographer Olaf van Gerwen – who has shot a TV commercial with the 5D Mark II - told of his experiences filming and editing with the Full HD capability of the EOS 5D Mark II.
To round off the evening Bram Elderman of Apple explained the different sizes for HD and how to edit video, stills and audio material using Final Cut Pro or iMovie editing packages.
Photographer Michael Kooren attended the event and told CPN: “The speakers were very entertaining and informative and their enthusiasm came across very well. A lot of people have been experimenting with the EOS 5D Mark II, but ‘seeing is believing’. When you see what other photographers have done people go ‘Wow! I can do that’. I am going to pursue shooting video and incorporate it into my work.”

A full day ‘LightsCameraAction!’ event was held in Knokke-Heist, Belgium, on 28 May. Speakers included Geert van Kesteren; Mike Larson, from California Sunbounce, explaining how to work with light; Canon Netherlands product specialist Joachim Devedeleer talking about how to film with the EOS 5D Mark II; and photographer and filmmaker Wim van Ham on using the EOS 5D Mark II and Apple Final Cut Studio in your workflow.
