Ian Parry Scholarship deadline for online entries
Photographers aged 24 or under have until 24 June 2009 to apply online, with a digital portfolio, to the Ian Parry Scholarship 2009 for the chance to win a £3,000 prize to put towards an editorial assignment. This is the first year that the entry process for the Ian Parry Scholarship has been fully digital so, in order to enter, you must submit a digital portfolio online - only digital entries will be accepted.
The award was established in the memory of photojournalist Ian Parry who died, aged 24, whilst on assignment for the Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989.
The Ian Parry Scholarship was the idea of Aidan Sullivan (then picture editor of the Sunday Times, now vice president of photo assignments for Getty Images) and Ian’s friends and family in order to build something positive from such a tragic death at a young age.
The annual competition is open to photographers who are either attending a full-time recognised photography course or who are aged 24 years old and under. Entrants must submit a digital portfolio of not more than 12 of their photographs, a completed entry form, plus a brief synopsis of a project they would undertake if they won the award.
As well as the main prize of £3,000 additional awards of £500 will go to those photographers who have been awarded ‘highly commended’ and ‘commended’ by the 2009 jury.

The winner’s work will be published in The Sunday Times Magazine, and all of the Scholarship’s previous winners have progressed into a career as a professional photographer whilst still supporting the award. Previous winners include Jonas Bendiksen, Ziyah Gafic, Irina Wering, Aranxta Cedillo and Ivor Prickett. The 2008 winner was VJ Villafranca for his black and white portfolio of gang members of the ‘Chinese Mafia Crew’ living in Manila, the Philippines.
For the sixth year in a row World Press Photo has agreed to automatically accept the winner onto its final list of nominees for the Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam.
The award judging will be held on 3 July at the Frontline Club in London and confirmed members of the 2009 jury include Don McCullin (patron of the Ian Parry Scholarship), photojournalist Tom Stoddart (Getty Images), photojournalist Eugene Richards and Ian’s family.
A print exhibition showcasing all of the winning entries and will take place in London at the Getty Images Gallery for one week, starting from 5 August 2009.
