We have discovered that the original image data may disappear on PCs running Microsoft's Windows Vista™ operating system if TIFF (RAW) images shot with EOS-1D or EOS-1Ds digital SLR cameras are rotated or edited under certain circumstances.

For customers who use affected products, please be careful and follow the workaround listed below.

Affected Products

EOS-1D and EOS-1Ds digital SLR cameras

Phenomenon

On PCs running Windows Vista™, the original image data is lost if you use Windows Explorer or Windows Photo Gallery to rotate TIFF images taken with the affected products or if you edit an image's properties*. The images that disappear cannot be recovered.

Workaround

Microsoft has made software (an update program) available that fixes this problem. You can download this software from Microsoft's Web site.

Update for Windows Vista (KB932988)

Caution

After installing this software, if you display TIFF (RAW) image previews in Windows Photo Gallery, a message will appear: "Photo Gallery can't open this picture or video. The file appears to be damaged or corrupted." The file is not actually damaged, so please do not be alarmed.

The TIFF (RAW) image data taken with EOS-1D and EOS-1Ds can be checked in Canon's image viewing/editing software, ZoomBrowser EX or Digital Photo Professional. Please look here for Windows Vista™ - compatible versions of ZoomBrowser EX and Digital Photo Professional.
