Canon reveals lens trio

At the same time as Canon has announced the EOS 7D DSLR camera it has revealed a trio of new lenses. They are the EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM optic, that features Canon’s new ‘Hybrid IS’ Image Stabilizer technology, and two new EF-S kit lenses – the EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zooms.

EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

The EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM is the first ever Canon lens to incorporate Canon’s new Hybrid Image Stabilizer (IS) technology.

The EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens is the latest optic in the quality L-series of Canon lenses. This lens features Canon’s latest incarnation of its long-established Image Stabilizer technology (first introduced on Canon lenses in 1995), known as ‘Hybrid IS’ to solve the ‘problem’ of traditional IS systems generally being ineffective at very close range.

The EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM is the first Canon lens to feature its new Hybrid Image Stabilizer (IS) system.

Hybrid IS incorporates an angular velocity sensor plus a new acceleration sensor. This allows it to compensate for both angular camera shake, where the camera tips or pitches up and down or side-to-side, and shift (linear) camera shake where the camera moves in a level plane up and down or side-to-side. This new system can provide up to two stops of image stabilization benefit at 1.0x magnification and four stops in normal use.

This fast aperture macro optic features a UD element to reduce aberrations and provide high resolution. The lens also features Super spectra coatings to help to deliver the highest possible image quality and a three-position focus limiter to enable the lens to be limited to macro shooting, normal use or portrait shooting.

It also features a ring Ultra Sonic Motor (USM) for silent high speed AF, a 9-blade circular aperture for pleasing background blur to allow subjects to stand out from the background. A dedicated tripod mount is available and this attaches to the lens without the need for an adapter to allow for quick portrait and landscape switching without repositioning the camera. The lens is also dust and water-resistant.

The EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM incorporates a four-stop Image Stabilizer.

EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

The new Canon EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens (24-136mm equivalent in 35mm format) is a high quality wideangle to telephoto zoom for APS-C sensor cameras. It replaces the existing Canon EF-S17-85mm zoom in the lens range and, based on feedback from photographers, offers a wider focal length and higher image quality.

Featuring impressive build quality it has a four-stop Image Stabilizer that automatically detects panning and tripods and responds accordingly. The zoom lens has a minimum focus distance of 0.35m at all focal lengths, and Super spectra coatings that are optimised to minimise flare and ghosting. The lens incorporates a high speed USM motor, with full time manual focus, to give you control over your point of focus, plus a circular aperture for pleasing background blur (bokeh).

The lens also features a new high-grade cosmetic design for an improved look and feel over its predecessors, and offers very high image quality thanks to the use of UD and high precision GMo aspherical lenses.

The EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is an excellent all round lens for APS-C format cameras.

Extending the telephoto end of the zoom range the EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is available in one of the two EOS 7D camera kits. This 7.5x standard zoom (29-216mm equivalent in 35mm format) is designed for APS-C format cameras and covers wideangle to portrait focal length ranges. It is an excellent all round lens, ideal for shooting landscapes, sports and portraits.

The lens features a four-stop Image Stabilizer to allow for shooting in low light without camera shake and can automatically detect panning and tripods and responds accordingly.

The new lens is able to offer very high image quality thanks to its use of UD and aspherical lens elements and features Super spectra coatings that are optimised in order to minimise ghosting and flare. Like the new EF-S15-85mm lens, it features a new high-grade cosmetic design with textured coating for an improved look and feel.
