Gilles Peress (Magnum Photos), Sylvia Plachy and Martin Parr (Magnum Photos) will be the featured photographers at the third annual LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph that will take place in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA from 11 to 13 June 2009.

Peress began his photographic career in 1970 and has documented events in Northern Ireland, Lebanon, Palestine, Iran, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq - he is current the professor of human rights and photography at Bard College, New York. Martin Parr is arguably the UK’s most important contemporary photographer – he is most famous for his images of working class people and over 20 books of his work have been published. Sylvia Plachy has been a photographer since 1964 and her work has appeared in over 50 publications since then, most notably The Village Voice. Legendary photographer Richard Avedon said of her: “She is everything a photographer should be.”

On each evening of the festival, at Charlottesville’s Paramount Theater, one of these legends of photography will be part of the festival’s ‘Insight Conversations’ series where they will share images and stories from their careers. Plachy will be in conversation with Melissa Harris (editor-in-chief of Aperture magazine) on 11 June; Parr will be in conversation with photographer John Gossage on 12 June; and Gilles Peress will be talking with MaryAnne Golon (consulting editor at Time magazine) on 13 June. Each of the featured photographers will also have an exhibition of their work held in a local gallery.

LOOK3 Festival attendees gather in the Charlottesville Pavilion for the final evening projection in June 2008.

As well as the ‘Insight Conversations’ the LOOK3 festival will have a programme of gallery shows, outdoor exhibits, nightly outdoor projections and special events. These will include ‘Masters Talks’ by portrait photographer Platon, Sports Illustrated photographer Simon Bruty and Time magazine photographer Callie Shell among others.

The event has its roots in over 20 years of ‘Hotshots’ backyard gatherings at the home of National Geographic editor-at-large and Canon Ambassador, Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols. Nichols told CPN: “LOOK3 was born out of the need to maintain community amongst photographers and I’m amazed at what the festival has become. I love that we now get to share that community with the public, which only expands the support system. People leave Charlottesville feeling inspired, like they have a big family, and nothing makes me happier.”

Nichols is co-executive director of the LOOK3 festival along with Jessica Nagle, co-founder of SNL Financial, and the festival’s board of advisors includes Melissa Harris, Scott Thode (director of photography at Fortune magazine), and David Griffin (director of photography at National Geographic Magazine).
