A picture taken by Cris Toala Olivares from the Netherlands has been chosen by GEO magazine’s director of photography Ruth Eichhorn as her favourite image from the thousands uploaded to the ‘Movement’ category of Editor’s Choice 3 in September. The Public’s Choice, made from Eichhorn’s 30-image shortlist, was a photo by Steve Deer from the UK.
In a special multimedia presentation Ruth Eichhorn talks in detail about the entries, including her five favourite images. It also showcases all of her 30-image shortlist. Commenting on her overall favourite image, by Cris Toala Olivares, Eichhorn said that although it depicts conflict "it’s very intriguing because it has an almost romantic look. It’s a beautiful landscape setting and there’s a sunny, blue sky. The smoke indicates a dangerous attack but [it] looks unusual because it cannot be a bomb attack because there’s no explosion but only smoke. [It] makes the viewer curious to find out what’s going on, and that curiosity is the best reason to print an image in a newspaper – with an explanatory caption, of course.”
