Young photographers applying to the Ian Parry Scholarship 2007 have until 15 June to submit their work. The award - sponsored by The Sunday Times, Getty Images and for the first time by Canon - is for photographers who are either attending a full-time recognised photography course or who are under the age of 24.
Ian Parry was a photojournalist who died while on assignment for The Sunday Times during the Romanian revolution in 1989. He was just 24 years old. The scholarship was set up by his friends and family in order to build something positive from such a tragic death.
Entrants must submit a portfolio of their work and a brief synopsis of a project they would undertake if they won the award. The prize is £2,500 towards their assignment and Metro Imaging also offers £500 worth of vouchers to the winner, along with £250 to those judged to be ‘highly commended’ and ‘commended’.
The award attracts some of the industry’s finest emerging talent and each year the winner’s work is published in The Sunday Times Magazine. All the previous winners have progressed into professional careers and still support the award.
In addition, World Press Photo has agreed to automatically accept the winner of the Ian Parry Scholarship onto its final list of nominees for the Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam. The organisers said this was a result of so many of the previous winners attending this prestigious event, most recently Irina Werning, winner of last year’s award.
The print exhibition will take place this year at the Getty Images Gallery in London, showing all of the winning entries and an edited selection of images chosen by the judges from work entered into the award. The exhibition will run from 3 August for two weeks.
The judging will take place at London’s Frontline Club on 25 June by a panel including Don McCullin, Philip Blenkinsop, Tom Stoddart and Simon Roberts.
Aidan Sullivan, founder and friend, said: “The Ian Parry Scholarship is not an event when you get a shiny trophy, a cheque, a handshake and then a fond farewell. This is a community, comprising all of the friends of Ian, the majority of whom never knew him but have all become part of his legacy.”
Applications are available by download only from www.ianparry.org. Please note the organiser’s new delivery address for portfolios and contact details.
