The winning images from the Press Photographer’s Year competition – which showcases the best press photography taken for and used by the UK media – are on show at the National Theatre on London’s South Bank until 30 August 2008.

First prize: News – People gather at the Australian War Memorial at Hyde Park Corner, London, 25 April 2007. The memorial is engraved with 24,000 names of the hometowns of Australian men and women who served in the two World Wars. Superimposed on these place names are 47 battle sites representing some of the major theatres of war where Australians served.

The third annual Press Photographer’s Year competition, which is sponsored by Canon, was open to professional photographers working in or for the UK media during 2007. It attracted a total of over 7,500 photographs entered by 325 photographers based in over 25 countries across Europe, plus entries from China, Thailand, India, USA, Australia, Argentina, Israel and Singapore.

The Photograph of the Year award went to Daniel Berehulak (Getty Images) for his shot of former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto adjusting her headscarf during a press conference held at her house in Karachi on 21 October 2007 (shown above). Berehulak also won first prize in the News Folio of the Year category.

First prize in the Live News category was won by Andrew Parsons (Press Association); News by Peter Macdiarmid (Getty Images); Features by Nigel Dickinson; Photo Essay by David Bebber (The Times); Portraits by Charles McQuillan (Pacemaker Press); and Arts and Entertainment by Bryan O’Brien (The Irish Times). Andy Hooper of the Daily Mail newspaper won both the Sports Folio of the Year and Sports Action categories and the other first prize winners were Gareth Copley (Press Association) in the Sports Specialist Folio of the Year category; Darren Staples (Reuters) in the Sports Features section; and Sean Smith of The Guardian newspaper in the Multimedia category.

The 128-page book ‘Assignments 3 – The Press Photographer’s Year’ has been published by to coincide with the exhibition. It features images shot by all of the category winners as well as a choice of some of the other powerful, moving and humorous entries to the competition.
