From over 110 entries photography student Charlotte Simpson has been chosen as the overall winner of an assignment set by Canon UK to shoot, edit, caption and file a five-image portfolio within 30 minutes from the recent 2012 London Fashion Weekend shows.
Canon UK arranged the challenge in conjunction with the British Fashion Council and gave students from various UK photography colleges and universities access to the photographers’ pit at designer and ‘trend shows’ during two days of the London Fashion Weekend. The top prize was an EOS 650D DSLR kit and a day as an accredited photographer to shoot next season’s London Fashion Week.
Frankie Jim, CCI Professional Imaging Specialist, Canon UK explained: “We gave the students a briefing as to what to expect, helped them set up their cameras, [explained] how to shoot catwalk and we set them an assignment that as soon as they’d finished [shooting] they’d got 30 minutes to edit, caption and send their five best images. There was no [direct] internet access there, so they really had to think on their feet and find a WiFi spot to edit and send in their images in time.”
Charlotte Simpson, a final year photography student at Norwich University College of the Arts in England, told CPN about the challenge: “I’ve never done anything like that [the assignment] before – it was really quite nerve-wracking. I had no experience of doing this type of shoot before, but it was brilliant and it seems to have gone well! It was definitely a 'money can't buy' experience, which I'm very grateful for, and now to have won the chance to shoot the big London Fashion Week is just madness.”
Simpson added: “I’ve always used Canon since I left school and when I went to do a National Diploma in photography aged 16 I got an [EOS] 400D. Fashion [photography] is definitely what I want to go into. I interned for [portrait and advertising photographer] Rankin over the summer – it was amazing. I worked as a photo production assistant and got to see what happened on sets. Our graduation is in June next year and then it’s out into the big, wide world. ”
