A picture by Moritz Hager from Switzerland taken with an EOS-1D Mark IV has been chosen by Reuters’ Alexia Singh as her favourite image from the thousands uploaded to the ‘Solitude’ category of Editor’s Choice 3 in October. The Public’s choice, made from Singh’s 30-image shortlist, was a photo by Thom Wirtz from Germany.
In a special multimedia presentation Alexia Singh talks in detail about the entries, including her five favourite images. It also showcases all of her 30-image shortlist. Singh said Hager’s picture captured the feeling of solitude more powerfully and directly than any of the other entries. "As soon as I saw it, it almost gave me a chill", she said. "It’s the eye of the prisoner... he’s looking not at the food but at the face of the warden, at another human. This is maybe one of only three times a day that his cell’s opened and he has somebody to look at. If I was to look at this picture as part of the daily file of Reuters’ images I would definitely stop [and] put it aside."
