From the many images submitted by Canon photographers from around the world to the third edition of Editor’s Choice, Barbara Stauss (picture director of Mare magazine, shown above) has chosen her favourite images from the highly diverse and very strong.

In a special CPN audio-visual presentation, Barbara Stauss describes her approach to editing the images and explains in detail her choice of the photographs that stood out. She revealed: "I don't really look for the perfect image - sometimes the perfect image is not so interesting. I rather like it when an image allows me to start my imagination going."

The pictures picked by Barbara Stauss included a mixture of strong portraits, landscapes, graphic images, and some perfectly composed and framed shots from as far afield as the USA, Argentina, the Ukraine, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK.

Barbara Stauss also advised young photographers: "When somebody calls me I ask them to send a PDF of their work and a synopsis. If they haven't shot the pictures yet a synopsis will do. I like large edits - when I'm interested I'll look at 60 or 80 images. Young photographers should think about stories and ideas. Try to find stories, but read and know more about the background."

Barbara Stauss and CPN would like to thank all of those photographers who submitted their images.

The power of Editor’s Choice has already been proven as the editors of the first two editions - Aidan Sullivan (vice president of photo assignments for Getty Images) and Magdalena Herrera (director of photography at GEO France) - have already expressed interest in working with at least five of the entrants to the first two editions of Editor’s Choice. Conclusive proof that photographic careers can be started or re-ignited as a result of entering Editor’s Choice.

The latest and current ‘guest editor’ for Editor’s Choice is Volker Lensch, the photo editor of the major German weekly news magazine Stern. Your Canon photographs can be submitted to him for review. You have until 31 October 2009 to submit your best Canon pictures to the fourth edition of Editor’s Choice.
