The latest multimedia special presentation by Reuters – ‘Times of Crisis’ – has won the award for ‘Best Multimedia’ in the 10th annual Editor & Publisher Photo of the Year contest.
Protestors hold signs behind Richard Fuld, chairman and chief executive of Lehman Brothers Holdings, as he takes his seat to testify at a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on the causes and effects of the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, on Capitol Hill in Washington. October 6, 2008.
The multimedia project, produced in conjunction with MediaStorm, covers the year since 15 September 2008 when Lehman Brothers became the largest bankruptcy in US history and it took the prize from the USA's longest running trade journal for the newspaper industry, Editor & Publisher.
Reuters’ Ayperi Karabuda Ecer (vice-president of pictures) and Jassim Ahmad (head of visual projects) had the concept for and directed the multimedia presentation. Ahmad explained: "Photography is unparalleled at conveying information with power and immediacy. We would weave together stories, pictures, video, graphics and data so that each piece of information advances the story within an immersive mixed-media experience."
Ahmed added: "Rich multimedia demands editorial time and creative resources. For those willing to invest in production the reward is compelling, distinctive site-building content. We continue to explore new approaches to information gathering, visualisation and interactivity to evolve storytelling."

The ‘Times of Crisis: The Year of Global Change’ film contains footage of public uprisings against the crisis from around the world, stills of foreclosures and people being forced to sleep rough and beg for food, interviews with workers in the financial industry, as well as footage of several key 20th century recessions.
The award for 'Times of Crisis' comes just four months after the Reuters/MediaStorm collaboration ‘Bearing Witness: Five Years of the Iraq War’ was nominated for an Emmy award in the category New Approaches to News & Documentary Programming: Current News Coverage.
In the wake of the success in the multimedia world Reuters has also just revealed its choice of the 100 Pictures of the Decade – the key images taken by Reuters photographers that have documented the first decade of the 21st century.
Reuters pictures project manager Shannon Ghannam told CPN: "Every day Reuters picture editors in Paris make a selection of images of the day, and they also do this at the end of the year. The pictures of the decade selection has been overseen by Alexia Singh, one of editors in Paris."

The choice of pictures of the past decade includes Olympic sporting achievements by Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps, the aftermath of 9/11, conflicts around the world, poverty, a new Pope, the Iraq War, and several celebrity portraits.
In a similar approach to that adopted for the Pictures of the Decade selection Reuters’ picture editors have also made a selection of their Pictures of the Year for 2009 from a total of over half a million images shot by Reuters photographers thus far in 2009. The picture selection, which is currently running at over 600 photographs, will continue to be regularly updated until the end of 2009
