Details of more key exhibitions, plus a new photojournalism forum, planned for the 22nd Visa pour l'Image international festival of photojournalism - to be held in Perpignan, France from 28 August to 12 September 2010 – have now emerged.
It has now been confirmed that the 30 exhibitions at the show will include Walter Astrada's (Reportage by Getty Images for the Alexia Foundation) work documenting violence against women in India, the project 'Wisdom of the Human Race' by photographer Olivier Föllmi, with texts by Danielle Föllmi, 'Black gold in Chrenobyl' by Guillaume Herbaut (Institute), a retrospective of the war in Chad between 1980 and 1985 by Tanguy Loyzance, and 'Behind the Curtains: Stories from the Last Communist Holdouts' by Tomas van Houtryve (VII Network).
A new feature of Visa pour l'Image this year is a forum that's called 'Transmission pour l'Image'. It's the opportunity for 50 invited young journalists to gain knowledge and discuss issues with six of the world's most experienced photojournalists and photo editors. This will run from 30 August until 1 September 2010 and the six professional "guides" for this forum will be Michael Nichols (National Geographic), Monica Allende (The Sunday Times Magazine), Pascal Maitre (Cosmos), Yuri Kozyrev (Noor), Samuel Bollendorff (Oeil Public) and Jérôme Delay (Associated Press).
The 2010 Visa pour l'Image exhibitions will also include a major retrospective of the work of William Albert Allard of National Geographic covering his pioneering colour photography over the past five decades.
The work of Canon Ambassador, and a National Geographic editor-at-large, Michael Nichols will be featured in an exhibition entitled 'Redwoods: California's Timber Wars'. It shows his project documenting the fight to save the giant redwoods in the coastal region of Northern California.
Major photojournalism exhibits will include 'Generation AK: Afghanistan and the Perils of Freedom, 1993-2009' by Stephen Dupont (Contact Press Images), covering the ever-changing face of Afghan society, and 'Pilgrimages' by Kazuyoshi Nomachi (Studio Equis) – the first Nomachi retrospective ever to be shown in Europe.
The exhibition 'The Congo River' will showcase the photography of Cédric Gerbehaye (Agence VU) that goes deep into the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo shortly before the country celebrates half a century of independence, whilst photographer Roberto Schmidt (AFP) will have a selection of his work from Iraq, Gaza, Haiti, Somalia, Congo and Kenya on show.
Other confirmed exhibitors at this year's Visa pour l'Image will include Olivier Laban-Mattei (AFP), Grégoire Korganow, Andrea Star Reese, Munew Wasif (Agence VU), and Craig F. Walker (The Denver Post/Polaris).
Amongst the female photographers having their work shown will be Gali Tibbon's 'Echoes of Christian Jerusalem' show, and the photographs of Stephanie Sinclair (VII) depicting 'Polygamy in America' and, in particular, one of America's most secretive Mormon sects. Also from a female eye is the ongoing project of Justyna Mielnikiewicz – the Canon AFJ Award winner in 2009 – depicting the complex conflicts within the South Caucasus.
Other exhibitions already confirmed are the touring World Press Photo exhibition, the City of Perpignan Young Reporter's Award 2010, and the Daily Press exhibition in which French and international daily newspapers exhibit their best shots of the year in competition for the 2010 Visa d'Or Daily Press award.
The 'Professional Week' of Visa pour l'Image 2010 will run from 30 August until 5 September. From 30 August until 4 September Visa pour l'Image's evening screenings will show the photographs that have reflected the main news events from September 2009 to August 2010 as well as specific topics such as the Haiti earthquake, South Africa: 20 years after Nelson Mandela's release from prison, the Korean War, and the career of Gamma co-founder Gilles Caron. From 2 to 4 September the screenings will also be shown simultaneously on a big screen in Perpignan's Place de la République.
Canon is the main sponsor of the Visa pour l'Image 2010 event.
