Canon XA25 & XA20: compact camcorders with pro-spec HD Video

Canon XA25 & XA20: compact camcorders with pro-spec HD Video

The XA25 and XA20 camcorders combine a powerful, all-new imaging system with dual-format recording, professional audio and WiFi connectivity in a versatile, yet highly compact package that fits neatly in the palm of a hand. A 20x zoom wide-angle lens offers a 26.8-576mm focal length range, employing optical technology first found in Canon’s top-of-the-range XF305 digital camcorder, while a newly designed 1/2.84-type 2.91 Megapixel HD CMOS Pro sensor provides outstanding dynamic range and low-light performance.

Who are they for?

A range of advanced shooting features and connectivity options make these cameras ideal for either professional or amateur use, and are suitable for shooting everything from news and documentaries to weddings. Features such as the ability to record in two different formats, AVCHD or MP4, at different bit rates on two separate SD cards will, in particular, appeal to news gathering teams for broadcast and web-based content.

The mobility, small size and control options make the XA25 and XA20 ideal for documentary production whilst the infrared shooting mode is perfect for applications such as wildlife shooting or reality TV. The additional HD-SDI output connection on the XA25 makes it especially attractive for broadcast use.

The compact form factor, 20x optical zoom and ease-of-use will suit police forces and other organisations, which often need to record discreetly whilst on the move, whose operators may not be experts. The GPS compatibility also makes the XA25 and XA20 supremely practical for those who need to know exactly when and where their footage was shot.

The XA25 and XA20 camcorders also provide an ideal solution for wedding videographers, thanks to their small size and high image quality. The simultaneous recording feature – providing instant back-up – will also appeal to users in this field.

Superbly flexible Canon HD Video Lens

Filmmakers can capture more than ever thanks to the stunning new 26.8mm wide-angle lens on the XA25 and XA20 models. A 20x zoom gets you closer to the action, while Dynamic Optical Image Stabilisation compensates for shake in five directions to provide ultra-steady images. An f/1.8 maximum aperture, 8-blade iris and EDM technology enable beautiful ‘bokeh’ effects.

Advanced Canon HD Video System for outstanding performance

A newly designed 1/2.84-type 2.91 Megapixel HD CMOS Pro sensor provides outstanding dynamic range and low-light performance. The increased sensor size maximises the photosite area, combining a highly sophisticated image processing system to reduce image noise and increase sensitivity in low light environments.

Quality monitoring with OLED touchscreen and tiltable EVF

The compact XA25 and XA20 cameras provide high-quality monitoring. An 8.77cm (3.5”) OLED touchscreen with a 1.23 million-dot resolution offers better response times, definition, contrast and colour reproduction than LCD equivalents. A 0.61cm (0.24”) 1.56 million dot EVF can tilt up to 45° to accommodate different shooting positions.

Dual-format recording to SD cards

The new DIGIC DV 4 processor in the XA25 and XA20 cameras expands your options. AVCHD video can be recorded at up to 28Mbps in 1080/50P, whilst for maximum quality a 35Mbps 1080/50P MP4 recording mode is available. Inclusion of two SDXC/SDHC memory card slots allows simultaneous recording (*1) of high-quality HD and lower resolution MP4 files for easier file transfer – ideal when a quick turn-around of footage is needed. Fast and slow motion recording options are available in MP4 modes.

Recording capacity varies according to the size of the SD card, but recording on a 32Gb card in AVCHD will give approx. two hours and 30 minutes recording time, while filming in MP4 will give approx. two hours recording time. Class 4 or better SDHC/SDXC cards are required for Full HD recording at 24Mbps.

Compact and easy-to-handle

Slightly larger than the XA10, the XA25 and XA20 camcorders are still small enough to appeal to users who require a discreet camera for filming in sensitive or confined environments while still producing high quality video images. The XA25 and XA20 feature the same removable handle concept launched with the XA10 camcorder. Easily attached or removed to suit the shooting situation, the top-mounted handle houses a range of additional controls, including XLR inputs for capturing professional quality audio from external microphones.

Enhanced Infrared shooting options

The removable handle for the XA25 and XA20 also integrates an IR lamp to enhance the shooting capabilities of the infrared mode – ideal for recording low light recording of night-time documentaries or nocturnal wildlife.

The XA25 and XA20 models utilise a new, diffused infrared LED which is approximately three times brighter than the infrared light found in the XA10 camcorder. This LED light features a wide radiation angle which provides brightness throughout the entire image area, resulting in more natural looking video recordings.

Professional audio functions

Audio functions are a crucial consideration for professional users, who value good audio quality as highly as good picture quality. The XA25 and XA20 both offer professional XLR audio connections and control on the detachable handle. Sensitivity can be set for Line, Mic or Mic with 48V phantom power. Level control can be operated manually or automatically with locking to prevent accidental change.

Advanced interfaces and studio connectivity

The XA25 and XA20 offer an advanced selection of interfaces, with physical inputs conveniently grouped together and designed to keep connections in place during handheld use; these include integrated HDMI, microphone, USB and headphone terminals. In addition, the XA25 camera offers an HD-SDI output – offering the high capacity, uncompressed connectivity that’s useful for many broadcast applications.

Built-in WiFi connectivity

The XA25 and XA20 also feature newly-integrated dual band WiFi support (2.4GHz and 5GHz), providing a range of capabilities for use during or after shooting, for example remote control, wireless FTP file transfer and direct upload to the web using Canon’s Movie Uploader app (available for iOS devices only).

GPS compatibility

The XA25 and XA20 are compatible with the optional GP-E2 GPS accessory. This accessory allows GPS data to be captured with video footage, providing an accurate record of where footage was captured. Data recorded includes Latitude, Longitude, Elevation and Coordinated Universal time (UTC).

(*1) Simultaneous recording not available in 1080/50p recording modes.

20x Canon HD Video lens

The XA25 and XA20 feature a new Canon 20x zoom lens (26.8-576mm range) and a new Optical Image Stabilisation system, which includes Dynamic IS. A beautiful ‘bokeh’ effect can be delivered thanks to a new, 8-blade circular aperture that uses Canon’s unique Electro Magnetic Diaphragm technology – developed for the company’s EF lens range – to ensure beautiful background blur in shots with a shallow depth of field. This new lens also includes Hi-UD glass elements, using technology originally developed for high-end broadcast TV lens and previously only found in Canon’s XF300-series camcorders.

Zoom or focus can be adjusted via a switchable ring at the front of the camera lens. Additionally, a new zoom rocker integrated into the camera body is ideal for shooting when handheld or tripod mounted, offering the fine control and convenience typically found on larger professional cameras.

New 1/2.84-type HD CMOS Pro Sensor

Canon develops and manufactures its own CMOS sensors for HD camcorders and the XA25 and XA20 cameras feature a newly developed 1/2.84-type HD CMOS Pro sensor with an effective pixel count of approximately 2.91 Megapixels. The sensor measures 2136x1362 pixels and improves the performance of the IS system while a new LSI (Large Scale Integration) chip improves signal-to-noise ratio and increased low-light sensitivity.

DIGIC DV 4 Processor

The DIGIC DV 4 processor in the XA25 and XA20 models is the latest development of Canon’s powerful processors for video cameras, replacing the previous DIGIC DV III. The outstanding processing capability provided by a DIGIC DV 4 processor provides enhanced image reproduction, supplementing the strengths of the DIGIC DV family – such as smooth gradation and faithful colour reproduction – with support for recording at higher data rates. The sensor and processor work together to eliminate more camera shake, augmenting a highly effective Optical IS system with electronic stabilisation that detects and compensates for movement in a larger number of directions.
