RESPONSIVE AND ADAPTABLE
Explore sports, portraiture, landscape, street, travel and low light photography with innovative technologies that help achieve stunning results. A 45 all cross-type point AF system and 7fps continuous drive at full resolution is great for sports and action shots while shooting stunning images in low light with an autofocus system that operates in tough lighting conditions – such as under floodlights or when shooting with narrow aperture lenses up to f/8 – further expands shooting opportunities. Customisable controls and menu functions allow the user to easily and quickly adjust the camera to their needs.
STUNNING QUALITY IN A WIDE RANGE OF CONDITIONS
Shoot vivid and detailed images ready for editing and display thanks to the 24.2 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor. Accurate and consistent exposure in a wide variety of situations is made possible thanks to a 7560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor that detects both infrared and visible light. And even when light levels fall, the user can still take natural atmospheric pictures thanks to a large ISO sensitivity range of ISO 100-16,000 (expandable to ISO 25,600). Flicker Detection – a technology first showcased in the EOS 7D Mark II – ensures consistent exposure and colour when shooting continuous bursts under artificial lights.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO STAY IN CONTROL
See everything right to the edge of the frame, with shooting settings instantly displayed, through the 100% Intelligent Viewfinder. The 7.7cm Vari-Angle LCD touch screen allows for more creative angles and an intuitive shooting experience. Shoot action from a different point of view while you compose using the screen thanks to Live View continuous shooting with Dual Pixel CMOS AF at 5fps or shoot more discreetly using the viewfinder with a 3fps quiet continuous mode.
CREATIVE VIDEOGRAPHY MADE EASY
The EOS 80D is a DSLR built for stunning movies as well as stills. Record in MP4 and Mov format with a variety of frame rates and codecs for editing and storage and – thanks to Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF – employ accurate focus tracking and smooth focus transitions. The Dual Pixel CMOS AF sensitivity and speed for movies can be controlled to adapt to the shooting situation and the look and feel of your movie. And should you wish to capture smooth action sequences or slow motion effects, Full HD movies can be captured at a higher 60p frame rate with the option for smooth action sequences or slow motion effects. Superb special effects cab be achieved in-camera with features such as Timelapse Movie, HDR, and Creative Filters while full control over audio levels is offered via headphone and microphone inputs.
EASILY CONNECT AND SHARE YOUR IMAGES
Further extending the EOS 80D’s connectivity, the user can control settings wirelessly from a compatible Android or iOS smartphone or tablet with a Live View. With just one tap, thanks to NFC technology, the user can connect the camera to Android devices1 and connect via a WiFi key from others. By using the free Canon Camera Connect app it is possible to quickly transfer images and movies to compatible smart devices for easy sharing on the move.
1 Android NFC devices v4.4 or greater with NFC capability.
45 POINT ALL CROSS-TYPE AF SYSTEM
The EOS 80D features a new, high performance, and flexible 45 point AF System. Each focus point is a f/5,6 ‘cross-type’ when used with a compatible lens, ensuring the camera can lock on to both horizontal and vertical detail quickly and accurately to deliver accurate and fast autofocus acquisition and tracking over a wide area and with a range of subjects. Anticipating the need to shoot in a range of lighting conditions and with a variety of lens and tele-converter combinations, the AF system is sensitive down to -3EV (moonlight) and contains 27 f/8 compatible AF points (9 f/8 cross-type) and one extra sensitive f/2.8 and f/5.6 dual cross-type. Allowing the AF points to be used flexibly, users have the choice of using 4 AF zone modes which are superimposed in the viewfinder and can be quickly selected using the AF area button next to the shutter release.
ADVANCED FOCUS TRACKING AND AI SERVO AF II
Thanks to the new 7,560-pixel metering sensor the EOS 80D can prioritise focus points that cover subjects where skin tones are detected and implement colour tracking AF when tracking moving subjects for sports and action photography.
24.2 MEGAPIXEL CMOS SENSOR
Designed and manufactured by Canon the 24.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor incorporates the latest sensor technology to support Dual Pixel CMOS AF, Full HD at 60p and capture images at high resolution with extraordinary levels of detail. An expanded ISO range from ISO 100-16,000 (H:25600) is also newly added to expand the performance when shooting in low light.
7560-PIXEL RGB+IR METERING SENSOR
The EOS 80D is equipped with a 7,560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor capable of detecting a wider range of wavelengths including infrared light and perform Flicker Detection. Both these features give more consistent exposures as with Flicker Detection the metering sensor can time the shot according to when flickering light sources are at their brightest and can exclude Infrared sources of light in an exposure calculation. The metering sensor also enables a White priority setting when using Auto White Balance that can eliminate most of the warm colour tones when shooting under tungsten light sources.
100% INTELLIGENT VIEWFINDER
An Intelligent Viewfinder with approximately 100% coverage and 22mm eye-point and 0.95x magnification gives a more immersive view of the action in front of the camera and a comfortable viewpoint. With information overlaid on the viewfinder the user can easily visualise a grid to help with composition, the active AF area and the active AF points while the subject is being captured or tracked in AI-Servo mode. Shooting information and Flicker Detection and electronic level warnings are displayed to keep the user informed.
FULL HD WITH 60P
The EOS 80D features Full HD (1080p) capture at variable frame rates up to 50 or 60fps – ideal for fast moving action or slow-motion footage that looks silky smooth, revealing the subtleties of motion in the captured footage.
DUAL PIXEL CMOS AF
Available at frames rates up to and including 60p Dual Pixel CMOS AF offers swift and accurate full time continuous focus when using Live View or recording Full HD movies. Each pixel features two photo diodes that can be read independently during autofocus or together to capture the image. Newly included with the EOS 80D is the ability to have finer control over Movie Servo AF responsiveness and speed. With the ability to fine-tune AF speed and sensitivity to provide videographers an AF system that can pull focus and track subjects at a pace that fits the look and feel of their movie. Dual Pixel CMOS AF is now also possible with all EF and EF-S lenses.
TIMER SHOOTING FUNCTIONS
The EOS 80D features a range of built-in timer shooting functions that enable photographers and videographers to control their camera over set lengths of time – a great way to record a slowly changing scene and create time-lapse movies. The in-camera timelapse mode allows videographers to specify the number of shots, interval and the camera will display the clip length and output a Full HD movie. The interval timer allows full resolution images to be recorded at pre-programmed intervals of between one second, through to 99 hours, 59 mins and 59 seconds, and between unlimited, one or 99 shots. For serious long-exposure photography, the camera’s shutter can also be locked up in the bulb mode for a specified length of time.
