EOS-1D Mark III – the 'weapon of choice' for sports photographers and many more...
The EOS-1D Mark III is an action and social documentary photographer’s dream. With a 10 megapixel resolution, the files are big enough for most users and the 10 frames per second shooting speed makes capturing the decisive moment just that little bit easier.
Who is it for?
Sports photographers and wildlife photographers alike will find the EOS-1D Mark III the perfect tool for the job. The potent combination of 10 megapixels and 10 frames per second makes it perfect for shooting action. The resolution is also ideal for photojournalists who have no need of huge file sizes, and the high ISO abilities of the EOS-1D Mark III make it a great social and wedding camera.
Key features
- 10.1 Megapixel APS-H CMOS sensor
- Dual DIGIC III processors
- 10fps shooting speed
- High precision wide-area AF
- 14bit A/D processing
- 3-inch LCD with Live View
- EOS Integrated Cleaning System
- ISO Range 100-3200 (L:50, H:6,400)
The EOS-1D Mark III’s Dual DIGIC III processor handles the data quickly enough to allow 110 frames to be captured in a single burst when set to Large JPEG settings. At 10 frames per second, that’s an entire world class 100m race from start to finish.
Combining the ability to shoot up to ISO 6400 and a re-designed autofocus system, the camera is eminently suitable for shooting in low light and fast action situations. The addition of the Live View Mode also makes the EOS-1D Mark III ideal for use in the studio, where critical focus can be checked on the rear LCD screen before the image is taken. Used with the WFT-E2, Live View Mode can be streamed back to your computer wirelessly in real-time allowing you to see what the camera sees remotely, so you can trigger the camera at the appropriate moment directly from your computer.
The integrated sensor cleaning system to reduce, repel and remove dust in your images will also save you time cloning out dust spots later, making your workflow smoother and faster.
As with all previous EOS-1 series cameras, this camera is built to be very tough. The body is made of a strong, but lightweight, magnesium alloy and all apertures are sealed with dust and waterproof gaskets. The shutter is rated to 300,000 cycles making it the most durable of any EOS camera.
The redesigned battery is another breakthrough. It is not only smaller and lighter, but also more powerful allowing you to continue shooting for longer before the battery needs replacing.
DIGIC processing
The DIGIC processors have been the heart of the EOS digital camera models for several generations. The DIGIC III processor in the EOS-1Ds Mark III has been teamed with a partner to provide two working simultaneously. This has the ability to process images faster and with more complex algorithms.
-
EOS Integrated Cleaning System
Dust is a fact of life with digital cameras. The EOS Integrated Cleaning System (ICS) helps to minimise dust entering the camera; repels dust that does get in; and removes dust that’s made it onto the sensor.
-
CMOS sensor
Canon pioneered the design and manufacture of CMOS sensors for digital cameras. To this day Canon not only uses, designs and builds its own CMOS sensors, but it also designs and builds the machines used to produce the sensors. This gives Canon complete control over the production process of the camera and ensures that everything works together harmoniously.

Wide-area AF
The composition and exposure may be perfect, but if it’s not in focus, the image is ruined. The wide-area AF with 19 cross-type AF points provides flexibility in composition and allows you to keep track of moving subject with ease.
