EOS 50D – high resolution and high speed
The Canon EOS 50D presents the perfect combination of speed and quality with a 15.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, DIGIC 4 processor and an ISO range up to 12,800. It is aimed at the enthusiast market but the camera has many features that will appeal to professionals as well.
Who is it for?
The EOS 50D is the top model in the Canon mid-range DSLR camera segment. It offers a blend of high resolution, high ISO performance and high frame rates, making it ideal for almost any photographer - from social and wedding shooters to landscape photographers, or even sports photographers. It is an ideal camera to take the step up to professional photography with and will also act as a perfect second body to either an EOS 5D Mark II or one of the EOS-1 series models.
- 15.1 Megapixel APS-C sensor
- 6.3 frames per second shooting speed
- DIGIC 4 processor
- ISO range to 12,800
- High precision wide-area AF
- Magnesium alloy body/li>
- EOS Integrated Cleaning System
- 3-inch VGA LCD screen with Live View mode
The 15.1 megapixel resolution of the EOS 50D makes capturing high resolution images with fine detail easy, and the camera’s DIGIC 4 processor keeps things moving along quickly at the 6.3fps shooting speed.
With a high ISO rating of 12,800 the EOS 50D is great for shooting in very low light levels - this allows you to keep the shutter speed up and hand hold the camera, even when it’s very dark.
Apart from processing the images quickly, the DIGIC 4 processor provides 14-bit image processing for smooth tonal gradations and natural looking colours. It also allows the EOS 50D to start-up almost instantly so that you never miss a shot.
The LCD screen is a 920,000 dot VGA screen which provides incredible clarity. Using it with the Live View Mode makes checking fine focus before taking the photograph easy. The large viewing angle of the screen also makes Live View Mode even more useful as the EOS 50D's screen can still be viewed even if you have your camera positioned at a relatively narrow angle from your view.
The Live View Mode also features improvements, providing three autofocusing methods – Quick AF, Live AF and Face Detection AF. To ensure accurate autofocus in normal use, the wide-area AF features 9 cross-type sensors spread across the entire AF frame. This makes it faster to focus on off-centre subjects and ensures your images are always in focus no matter how you compose them.
Although it is a consumer level camera, it features a magnesium alloy body to keep it light and durable. It also features environmental sealing to help keep water and dust out. Should any dust make it into the sensor, the EOS integrated Cleaning System with the new fluorine coating on the low pass filter to repel dust will help keep images clean and dust free.
- APS-C sensor
The APS-C sensor of the EOS 50D allows for a smaller and lighter camera design than a full-frame camera. The sensor also gives access to the EF-S range of lenses as well as the EF range. This opens up a world of high performance, yet lightweight, lenses especially suited to travel photography.
- High Resolution 3inch LCD screen with Live View
The screen on the EOS 50D is a VGA 640x480pixel unit with 920,000 dots. This provides a sharp, clear view of images in review and also makes using Live View Mode easier as you can judge focus more accurately.
- Live View Mode
Live View Mode lets you see what the sensor sees before you take the picture. It can be used to compose your image, check focus and exposure and accurately use graduated filters should you want to. The fully live histogram lets you see the effect of changes in shutter speed and aperture on the overall exposure and you can use the depth-of-field preview button to see how much will be in focus before you take the picture.
- EOS Integrated Cleaning System (ICS)
Dust is a fact of life with digital cameras. The EOS ICS helps to minimise dust entering the camera, repels dust that does get in and removes dust that has made it onto the sensor.
- 9 cross-type AF points
The camera’s AF system provides a fast and accurate way of focusing on your subjects. Featuring 9 cross-type sensors there is no need to be shackled to the central AF point when focusing on a moving subject as the peripheral points are almost as sensitive.
