The EOS 5DS R is the sister model to the EOS 5DS and together both cameras represent Canon’s new breed of high-resolution DSLRs. The EOS 5DS R offers studio photographers, in particular, the most detail ever from its incredible 50.6 Megapixel high-resolution sensor, thanks to the inclusion of a low-pass cancellation filter that allows for maximum resolution from the sensor.
Aimed at professional photographers and serious enthusiasts looking for the ultimate in image quality with no low-pass filter effects, the EOS 5DS R’s high-resolution 50.6 Megapixel sensor makes it perfectly suited for studio and advertising photographers looking for the ultimate in image quality for brochures, billboards and magazine front covers.
Canon’s new image sensor will grab the attention of medium format photographers. With a stunning 50.6 Megapixels and an image size of 8688 x 5792 pixels, the EOS 5DS R is capable of outstanding levels of sharpness and resolution, previously unseen in an EOS DSLR.
The sensor features a 16-channel readout to allow the 14-bit RAW data to be read out quickly and then processed by four analogue-to-digital converters. The sensor manufacturing process has been improved to ensure image performance does not suffer, despite the smaller pixel size, and to improve the photodiodes’ area (to improve the photoelectric conversion rate), the CMOS semiconductor manufacturing process incorporates a new refinement process that was introduced for the EOS 7D Mark II.
As a result, despite the smaller pixel size, it is still possible to achieve low noise and a wide dynamic range similar to the EOS 5D Mark III. The sensor uses optimised gapless microlenses for their excellent light gathering efficiency and, by shortening the distance between the microlens and photodiode, this further improves efficiency to achieves low noise images at high ISO speeds.
The EOS 5DS R features a low-pass cancellation filter to counteract the effects of the low-pass filter to provide the maximum possible resolution of the sensor. The sensor’s ability to produce exceptionally detailed images means that images can be blown up to significantly larger sizes with no loss of quality. Up to A0 (33.1x46.8in) is possible at 200dpi.
An intelligent viewfinder, similar to that found on the EOS 7D Mark II, features on EOS 5DS R and, uniquely, allows for a crop shooting ability for the first time. Three crop options are available with indications displayed in the viewfinder - 1.3x with a resolution of 30.5 Megapixels, 1.6x with a resolution of 19.6 Megapixels and 1:1 aspect ratio at a 33.5 Megapixel resolution. The user can select if the areas are Masked (areas outside are shaded) or Outlined (lines shown in the viewfinder).
A new setting has been added to the Auto White Balance (AWB) menu, to allow users to select how the camera should correct the white balance when shoot under tungsten lighting. The two options offered are:
Ambience Priority: this setting ensures the camera’s Auto White Balance system retains some of the warm colour tones from the light source to give a natural look to the images.
White Priority: this setting tries to eliminate most of the warm colour tones caused by tungsten lighting to give neural whites in images. This is the first time such a setting has been included in an EOS DSLR. If shooting under the lighting with different light source characteristics from tungsten lighting, the expected effect may not be obtained.
A new Picture Style - known as Fine Detail - has been developed to maximise the amount of detail from the sensor. This Fine Detail mode priorities the gradation of tones and detail and is not intended for images that will receive post-processing. The colour saturation of this setting is close to Standard setting and Contrast is the same as Neutral Picture Style.
Canon introduced the Quick Control screen back in the EOS 5D Mark II, which allowed access to some of the most commonly used features from the display on the camera’s rear LCD. With the EOS 5DS R, this display can be customised by the user to display only the functions they require, as well as their size and positions on the screen.
For the first time in an EOS DSLR, a time-lapse Movie mode is offered. This mode takes still photographs at set intervals and joins them in-camera to create a silent movie (in .MOV format) saved to the camera’s memory card.
It can be used in a wide variety of scenarios such as showing changes in scenery, plant growth, star trails, people moving, the construction of a building or a ship, or other progressive sequences in a very short time.
Shooting intervals can be set to between 1 sec. to 99 hr. 59 min. 59 seconds for a sequence of images between 2 and 3,600 shots. Subsequent movies created by the camera can be either Full HD (1980x1080) 29.97p ALL-I if the camera is set to NTSC or Full HD (1980x1080) 25.00p ALL-I if set to PAL. A sequence of 3,600 shots will produce a movie with a playback time of about 2mins at Full HD 29.97p ALL-I, or about 2min 24 sec. at Full HD 25.00p ALL-I
The Super Speed USB (USB 3.0) terminal enables high-speed image transfers to a computer. The terminal is a Super Speed USB Micro B port and the dedicated Interface Cable IFC-150U II is provided.
To protect the USB connection on the camera from damage a new adapter is supplied. The camera has two screw holes on the body for the adapter to connect to.
Responsive and powerful image processing comes courtesy of two DIGIC 6 processors. Together these processors govern every aspect of the camera’s behaviour, from autofocus and exposure metering to the processing of sensor data into high-quality stills and movies.
The extra processing power of the DIGIC 6 processors allows data to be captured and processed faster than ever before. It enables the EOS 5DS R to capture full resolution RAW and JPEG images continuously at 5fps.
For consistent, accurate exposure metering the EOS 5DS R uses the same 150,000-pixel sensor as the EOS 7D Mark II, which splits up the scene into 252 areas. Each one is analysed and the correct exposure settings are either set automatically or recommended to the photographer. Infrared light is measured as well as light in the visible part of the spectrum, for greater accuracy in tricky lighting conditions.
By taking advantage of the 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor, the metering system of the camera detects the face and colour and works as an IR detection sensor. This function is used for metering, flash metering, as well as AF. Metering can be affected by colours such as green and yellow due to their reflectivity of infrared light, but the new sensor can detect this and eliminate exposure issues. Colour information is used by evaluative metering and the E-TTL II autoflash algorithm while Face Detection is utilised by evaluative metering during face detection and for the E-TTL II autoflash compensation algorithm. This means that the E-TTL flash exposure system should be more accurate than the EOS 5D Mark III and more similar to that of the EOS-1D X.
The IR detection sensor is also used to reduce AF error caused by different light sources and to improve the precision of Scene Detection for Auto White Balance, Picture Style Auto and Auto Lighting Optimizer.
The EOS 5DS R features the same AF system as the EOS 5D Mark III however, coupled with the advanced metering sensor from the EOS 7D Mark II, AF performance similar to the EOS-1D X is possible with the inclusion of EOS iTR.
As with the existing cameras, such as the EOS 5D Mark III, the EOS 5DS R features six AF case settings for shooting different moving subjects as well as a selection of AF point configurations, from Spot AF to All Area AF.
EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) AF works in tandem with the EOS iSA (Intelligent Subject Analysis) system using the 150,000-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor to improve subject-tracking performance during automatic AF point selection.
There are three ways in which the iSA system assists the iTR AF:
(i) The metering sensor's high pixel count improves face detection performance. (ii) A new algorithm improves the AF's automatic AF point selection. (iii) A new algorithm for colour tracking improves tracking performance of non-human subjects.
Under flickering light like fluorescent light, using a faster shutter speed may result in irregular exposures and colours or irregular exposure and colour in isolated scenes due to the light’s flicker frequency. The EOS 5DS R detects the flicker frequency and capture the picture near the peak brightness to reduce flicker effects. This function works with a flicker frequency of 100Hz and 120Hz. If flicker is detected in the A+ (Automatic) mode, anti-flicker shooting takes effect automatically without intervention by the user.
The EOS 5DS R features a new cam-driven mechanism that reduces blur caused by camera-shake as the result of mirror vibration. This effect becomes more apparent with the higher number of pixels. The main cause of camera-shake is the impact shock that occurs when the quick-return mirror collides with stopper parts inside the camera. To prevent this, Canon developed a new cam-driving mechanism to reduce the speed of mirror movement, helping tackle the cause of this problem.
This new mechanism – first seen in the EOS 7D Mark II – differs from conventional spring type designs that work by firing the mirror at high speeds by a tensioned spring. Instead, the newly-developed mirror control system is driven by motor and a series of cams that push the mirror up and pull it down. The mechanism suppresses vibrations that normally occur during mirror movement and enables the full resolving power of the camera to be utilised by decreasing camera-shake blur while also softening the shutter-release sound.
Additionally, the tripod socket, bottom stainless steel chassis and the bottom parts of the bodywork that connect to the chassis have also all been strengthened or thickened to help prevent or reduce camera wide vibrations that may affect image quality.
