Superb image quality
A brand new APS-C sensor gives greater flexibility allowing the user to capture images in higher resolution and crop into an image with minimal loss of picture quality. Working in tandem with a powerful DIGIC 5+ image processor, colours are reproduced accurately whilst tonal gradation is subtle and natural.
Outstanding Live View autofocus ability
Thanks to new Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, seen for the very first time in the EOS 70D, Live View focusing has taken a big step forward with two photodiodes per pixel, allowing phase-detection AF on the imaging sensor’s surface. This Canon breakthrough technology allows users to shoot both still images and high quality Full HD (1080p) movies of moving subjects, keeping them sharp at all times – even when approaching the camera.
The Dual Pixel CMOS AF array covers 80% of the total image sensor area so even off-centre subjects can be tracked with higher speed and greater accuracy.
Fast image processing
The benefits of the DIGIC 5+ processor are great and have already proved themselves in Canon cameras, such as the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS 6D. The processor has been designed to complement the EOS 70D’s CMOS sensor and enables the EOS 70D to achieve fast shooting speeds of up to 7fps at full resolution – capturing maximum detail, accurate colours and low noise, in all conditions.
Lightweight with superb handling
A composite construction made from polycarbonate resin with glass-fibre, the EOS 70D is built to withstand the rigours of today’s modern lifestyle. Simple controls and intuitive ergonomics make it quick and easy to handle while a 7.7cm (3.0”) Vari-angle Clear View LCD II Touch screen makes easy work of Live View filming and composition with 100% field-of-view.
New intelligent viewfinder
With 98% coverage, 0.95x magnification and an exceptionally clear view of the subject through the lens, the EOS 70D’s viewfinder performs beautifully and offers at-a-glance information without taking attention away from the subject. With information superimposed in the viewfinder the user can easily see the chosen AF area and the active AF points while the subject is being captured or tracked. As well as standard viewfinder information such as shutter speed, ISO value and aperture, the EOS 70D offers additional shooting information and warnings such as AE lock, exposure level/compensation, spot metering circle, exposure warning, Auto-exposure bracketing as well as flash and composition information such as a useful composition grid and an electronic level indicator.
Easy Touch screen control
Featuring a flip-out LCD screen, the EOS 70D is a very versatile tool for Live View and HD Movie shooting. The screen is a 3-inch design and features 1040k dots for very high-resolution viewing of your images and movies. With easy, user-friendly functionality, the user is able to adjust camera settings quickly and accurately with the minimum of fuss.
The screen also makes it easy to capture images from awkward camera positions without having to strain yourself by over-reaching. High shots over a crowd or low shots in a tight corner are really easy to achieve while focusing is easily controlled thanks to three easily selectable AF options.
Continuous full resolution shooting at up to 7fps
Faster, more responsive continuous shooting at the highest possible quality is made possible thanks to a shutter capable of up to 7fps. In conjunction with the powerful buffer processing of the DIGIC 5+ processor, up to 65 JPEG or 16 RAW images can be taken in one continuous burst with a UHS-I (SDHC) compatible memory card.
Built-in WiFi for unparalleled connectivity
With built-in WiFi connectivity the EOS 70D can be wirelessly connected to a tablet computer or iOS/Android smartphone to shoot remotely from alternative viewpoints. Images can also be transferred via PictBridge over Wireless LAN compatible printers.
Live View and Full HD movie shooting
Like all current EOS DSLR models in the range, the EOS 70D features Full HD Movie recording with the ability to shoot 1080p resolution movies at a variety of frame rates and compression levels. With either auto or full manual control over both exposure and audio levels the EOS 70D provides an exceptionally powerful tool for shooting professional-looking movies. Thanks to Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, movie shooting with continuous focusing has never been easier or more accurate with moving subjects tackled with precision, even when moving towards the camera.
Wide range of creative options
Creative Filters such as Art Bold, Water painting, Grainy B/W, Soft focus, Toy camera, Miniature effect and Fisheye help to expand the creative options of photography. These filters can be applied to both captured RAW and JPEG files and one image can be processed several times with different filters to see the different effects. Along with the filters, a High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode allows the EOS 70D to take multiple exposures of a scene and combine them in-camera to deliver rich detail in shadow and highlight areas.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
A groundbreaking innovation from Canon that puts phase detection AF onto the image sensor, making fast and accurate focus tracking and one-shot focus possible.
Two photodiodes per pixel have been incorporated into the APS-C CMOS sensor, which improves focus tracking and one-shot AF.
Ordinary sensors have microlenses attached to each RGB pixel, and under these the photodiodes change the light into electronic signals that are distributed to each pixel. However, with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, two photodiodes are linked to each microlens. As a result, two parallax images are captured at once. Signals from these two images are used to carry out phase-difference AF. In addition, by combining two photodiodes, the image signal can be output as one pixel making, for the first time, a Live View mode that is faster and more accurate than ever before.
Movie Servo AF in Live View with Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology is beautifully smooth, and can track without significant loss of focus, even when subjects are moving towards the camera.
The new Canon developed 20.2 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor provides high-resolution and control over depth-of-field, enabling the capture of a wide range of scenes from portrait to landscapes. The sensor features an advanced CMOS architecture, with a high dynamic range and low noise at high ISO settings.
New photodiodes with improved transistors inside each pixel offer high sensitivity, while gapless microlenses offer superior light-gathering ability for enhanced image quality in low light. Canon’s CMOS technology integrates advanced noise reduction circuitry at each pixel site, delivering very clean images achievable over a wide native ISO speed range of 100-12,800 (expandable to 25,600). A high-speed 14-bit signal conversion combines with Canon’s DIGIC 5+ image processor for smooth tonal gradations and natural colours. A four-channel read-out also supports high speed shooting of up to 7fps at full resolution.
DIGIC 5+ processing
Image information is processed by Canon’s DIGIC 5+ processor, which has been designed to complement the EOS 70D’s CMOS sensor. The inclusion of the DIGIC 5+ processor enables the EOS 70D to achieve fast shooting speeds of up to 7fps at full resolution – capturing maximum detail, accurate colours and low noise, in all conditions.
Working in tandem with the CMOS sensor, the DIGIC 5+ processor allows photographers to shoot at high ISO speeds while achieving high image quality as standard. Multiple exposure shots for composite images are also supported, as well as in-camera High Dynamic Range (HDR) shooting for preserving both highlights and shadows in images.
IFCL metering algorithm & 63-zone Dual Layer metering sensor
Recording light is the basis of what a camera does. In order to record it correctly, it needs to be able to measure the light in the scene accurately. In the EOS 70D an intelligent Focus Colour Luminance (iFCL) metering algorithm and 63-zone Dual-layer Metering Sensor has been deployed. The iFCL metering algorithm is an intelligent system that uses focus, colour and luminance information to more accurately determine the light levels. The metering sensor features 63 metering zones and has two light sensitive layers. One layer is sensitive to red/green light and one is sensitive to blue/green light. Being able to measure the relative levels of red and blue light allows the system to more accurately expose a scene.
19-point cross-type AF
The EOS 70D’s AF sensor has 19 AF points, all of which are cross-type sensitive with lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or faster. This provides better accuracy and a faster response no matter which AF point you select. The central point provides enhanced precision with lenses featuring a maximum aperture of f/2.8 or greater to really make use of fast, wide aperture lenses.
Integrated Speedlite Transmitter
The EOS 70D includes an Integrated Speedlite Transmitter for optical control of remotely positioned Canon Speedlite flashgun. It acts as a master control unit in the same way that a Speedlite flashgun can be used to optically control wireless slave units. This opens up new worlds of wireless flash shooting. Further creative options are achievable with the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 which has four channels in two groups allowing multiple flash possibilities.
Using the EOS Remote app you can also control the EOS 70D remotely when you don’t want to disturb your subject. The EOS Remote app allows you to change camera settings, adjust the focus on the Live View screen and release the shutter to capture the shot. Photographers can also use EOS Remote to review and rate the images shot on the EOS 70D on a bigger screen, post them to popular social networking sites and other cloud services.
The EOS 70D’s wireless connectivity allows photographers to shoot and transfer data via PictBridge over Wireless LAN compatible printers, PCs, smart televisions, social media platforms and cloud-based storage and services such as Canon iMAGE GATEWAY.
