PowerShot G11 - the ultimate pocket camera
For professionals who want a pocket camera as a back up to their EOS SLRs the Canon PowerShot G11 ensures you get the shot in all lighting conditions. Following on from the award-winning PowerShot G10, the G11 boasts a new Dual Anti-Noise system for low light shooting at full resolution, a 5x optical zoom lens with a 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer, and a superb Vari-Angle LCD screen for flexible shooting options.
Who is it for?
The PowerShot G11 is a compact camera that will find favour with professionals and advanced amateur photographers due to its superb image quality, full manual control of settings, and RAW shooting capability. If it's not practical or safe to carry a large DSLR a high-specification compact such as the PowerShot G11 is a fantastic choice. It's great for photographers looking to capture high resolution, high quality, and low light images without having to carry a large SLR system in their kitbags.
Key features
- 10.0 megapixels
- Dual Anti-Noise System
- 5x wideangle lens with 4-stop optical IS
- Full Manual control and RAW shooting ability
- DIGIC 4 processor
- 2.8-inch vari-angle PureColor II VA LCD screen with 170 degrees opening angle and 270 degrees rotational angle
- i-Contrast to optimise dynamic range of subjects
- Exposure compensation and ISO dials
- Internal flash sync up to 1/2000sec
- Compatible with EX series Speedlite flashguns
The PowerShot G11 has a Dual Anti-Noise System that combines the technology of the new high-sensitivity 10.0 Megapixel sensor and the camera's enhanced DIGIC 4 processor to help to minimise the noise caused by high ISO shooting. The result is you can shoot at full resolution up to ISO 3200 and the noise reduction is equivalent to two stops compared to the PowerShot G10. ISO can also be extended up to 12,800 to deliver reduced resolution shooting of 2.5 megapixels at up to 2.4 frames per second.
As with the PowerShot G9 and G10 models the G11 is able to shoot RAW images but with the Canon Digital Photo Professional version 3.7 software RAW files from the PowerShot G11 can also have post-shoot lens corrections such as chromatic aberration and peripheral distortion.
The 2.8-inch vari-angle PureColor II VA LCD display provides a high-resolution screen with 461K pixels for detailed image review and has a 270 degrees rotational screen that allows for shooting at difficult angles.
Within the G11 spec there is a range of advanced shooting functions that includes ultra fast shooting with a new Quick Shot mode that continuously adjusts focus to ensure that focus and exposure is superbly accurate; Servo AF/AE for continuous focus and exposure adjustments; and internal flash sync capabilities up to 1/2000sec, compared to 1/500sec on the G10.
The G11 features face detection technology that can detect and track numerous faces within the frame to ensure the correct exposure and focus for them. An enhanced i-Contrast system (compared to the G10) optimises the dynamic range of subjects to deliver shadow details whilst avoiding highlight blow outs.
The PowerShot G11 retains the full VGA video function of the G10 that's perfect for shooting video clips that are suitable for use on the web and in new media deliverables.
- 5x zoom lens
The 5x zoom lens on the PowerShot G11 extends down to a 28mm equivalent in 35mm format, making it perfect for capturing wideangle scenes, and zooms in to the equivalent of 140mm. Combined with an optical 4-stop IS mechanism this ensures sharp images even when the camera is hand held in low light and at longer focal lengths.
- Dual Anti-Noise System
As seen in the Canon DSLR models, like the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 50D, the DIGIC 4 processor carries out image processing in-camera and in combination with the high-sensitivity 10.0 Megapixel delivers full resolution shooting up to ISO 3200 for exceptional performance in all lighting conditions.
- 2.8-inch vari-angle PureColor II VA LCD
The LCD screen has 461,000 dots giving a clear and sharp view on images either when shooting or in playback mode. It includes a real time histogram display so you can easily view conditions and alter your shooting settings if required.
- Enhanced i-Contrast
The i-Contrast system seen on the PowerShot G10 has been enhanced to deliver better coverage from low light shadow details to highlights with minimised blow out.
- RAW shooting
Many professionals prefer to shoot in RAW mode rather than shooting JPEGs. The PowerShot G11 features a RAW recording mode so that you can obtain the highest quality images possible from the camera and integrate the G11 easily into your RAW workflow.
- Auto White Balance
A technology from the EOS DSLR series the G11 has a White Balance Correction feature that allows you to adjust white balance correction in-camera so you can fine-tune for the colours you want in your pictures.
