Bright f/1.8-2.8, 28mm, 5x zoom Canon lens
The precision 5x (28-140mm) zoom lens is designed to combine perfectly with the sensor for high resolution and high image quality. Its 5x optical zoom provides outstanding versatility, offering an f/1.8 aperture at its 28mm wide-angle, and an f/2.8 aperture at its maximum 140mm focal length. This offers photographers extra freedom to shoot in low-light, use fast shutter speeds for freezing motion, or add atmosphere to stills by using a shallower depth-of-field throughout the camera’s entire zoom range. The lens’ 5x zoom focal range makes it ideal for a wide range of shooting conditions; this can be extended up to a 10x zoom via the camera’s ZoomPlus feature.
12.1 Megapixel high-sensitivity (HS) sensor
The PowerShot G15 has a 1/1.7-type high-sensitivity CMOS sensor. When combined with the DIGIC 5 image processor it produces stunning DSLR-like full resolution image quality, with reduced noise, at up to ISO 12,800. The high resolution of the sensor also allows you to see more detail in images and gives the ability to crop images and still be able to print at large sizes.
Super-fast image processing
The DIGIC 5 processor in the G15 can process six times the amount of information compared to the DIGIC 4 processor used in all previous Canon G-series compacts, bar the flagship Powershot G1 X. With this vastly increased processing power advanced noise reduction is possible to provide even better image quality than the DIGIC 4-powered HS System.
High ISO capabilities
The camera’s high ISO – up to 12,800 – allows photographers to achieve faster shutter speeds to freeze the movement of subjects and achieve blur-free images. High ISO allows you to shoot confidently without the use of flash or a tripod and, if flash is used, the flash range will reach further.
4-stop Intelligent IS for sharp, detailed images
The PowerShot G15’s 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer ensures that shots are sharp, crisp and detailed when shooting at telephoto focal lengths or in low-light conditions. Additionally, Intelligent IS automatically identifies the scene and can adapt the optical Image Stabilizer to seven different situations for optimal compensation, so movie footage remains smooth and stills are crisp, even when shooting at full zoom or when using slower shutter speeds.
Large, clear LCD screen and OVF
A sharp 920k-dot resolution 7.5 cm (3.0’’) PureColor II G screen is ideal for composition and playback, with a wide viewing angle and a tempered glass layer offering enhanced durability and visibility. An optical viewfinder also provides an alternative to Live View composition, providing a more traditional through-the-lens shooting experience.
Superb build quality
The PowerShot G15 features the signature design characteristics of the Canon PowerShot G-series, offering excellent handling for everyday use. Its lightweight, robust aluminium body is approximately 17% slimmer than the PowerShot G12, making it an ideal complement to a DSLR camera.
Full manual control
Photographers can take full manual control of the PowerShot G15 with the two-level top control dial, a front dial and dedicated Movie Record and shortcut buttons – making it easy for users to access and adjust camera settings between shots.
Offering similar levels of manual control to those found on Canon EOS DSLRs, the PowerShot G15 allows photographers to adjust settings such as aperture, shutter speed, white balance and ISO sensitivity. Exposures can be fine tuned with +/-3 stops of exposure compensation; these values can be manually set in 1/3-stop increments via one of the top plate dials.
RAW now includes multi-aspect support, allowing photographers to explore different aspect ratios in post-production editing using the supplied Digital Photo Professional software. A Dual Axis Electronic Level display helps achieve shots with a straight and perfectly levelled horizon.
Full HD Movies, HDMI-CEC
The PowerShot G15 features a dedicated movie record button to begin instant recording of superb Full HD 1080p movies at 24fps. The camera’s optical zoom can be utilised during recording, whilst AF in movies also ensures that subjects remain crisp, clear and in focus. Filmmakers can enjoy high quality playback of footage on an HDTV via the camera’s HDMI-CEC connection. An iFrame (720p) movie format is also available for fast editing of footage on Apple devices.
Quick autofocus and High-Speed Burst HQ
The camera’s high-speed autofocus system captures subjects in beautifully clear and sharp detail. The G15 can also capture split second action at an astonishing 10 frames per second (fps) in a full resolution burst using its High-speed Burst HQ mode. Other shooting modes in the camera include the Super Slow Motion Movie mode and a Handheld Night Scene mode.
Smart Auto and Face ID
The Smart Auto feature of the G15 automatically selects camera settings from 58 different scenes (21 in movies) to deliver optimum results. It also operates with faces stored in Face ID and actually adapts settings according to registered age, such as turning off flash and sounds when a sleeping baby is detected. Multi-area White Balance correction in Smart Auto compensates for multiple light sources in the same scene for natural images.
High Dynamic Range mode
A High Dynamic Range mode takes multiple exposures of a scene and then combines them in-camera to deliver rich detail in shadow and highlight areas. The camera’s built-in 3-stop ND filter lets you use longer shutter speeds or wider apertures in bright light.
Wide range of accessories
The PowerShot G15 can be used with many Canon EOS System accessories, including the Canon Speedlite EX flashguns that fit onto the camera’s hotshoe to offer creative flash possibilities. The Conversion Lens Adapter LA-DC58L allows you to use Canon’s MR-14EX or MT-24EX macro flash units for close-up flash possibilities. Compatibility with 58mm filters is available by using the FA-DC58D Lens Filter Adapter.
A specially designed underwater housing case – the Waterproof Case WP-DC48 – allows you to have full control of the PowerShot G15 either for shooting in heavy rain or for underwater shooting down to a maximum depth of 40 metres.
Canon develops and manufactures its own CMOS sensors in-house. Canon pioneered the use of CMOS sensors in DSLR cameras due to the performance advantages they offer in terms of speed and low power consumption. The CMOS sensor in the G15 provides high light sensitivity, an expanded dynamic range at both low and high ISOs (up to 12,800), and a better signal-to-noise ratio. A 4-channel readout provides high-speed image capture for fast, responsive performance in all conditions.
DIGIC 5 processor
The high-end DIGIC 5 processor found in the G15 can process six times the amount of information compared to the DIGIC 4 processor found in many previous Canon G-series compacts. With more processing power the DIGIC 5 processor is able to perform more complex image processing, and advanced noise reduction, to provide even better image quality than the DIGIC 4-powered HS System.
5x optical zoom lens
The PowerShot G15 incorporates a new, cutting-edge precision Canon lens that opens up a range of creative possibilities. The super bright f/1.8-2.8 lens has been developed using new highly refractive glass with a unique multiple material coating engineered to handle specific wavelengths of light at the nanometre scale. The zoom lens is constructed of 11 elements in nine groups, including one single-sided aspherical lens, one Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) lens element and two double-sided aspherical lenses.
The Image Stabilizer in a Canon lens works by shifting a stabilizer group of elements to compensate for motion detected by a gyroscope in the lens. Once activated, the Image Stabilizer provides the equivalent of up to four stops of shutter speed so you can shoot hand-held and capture acceptably sharp images at much slower shutter speeds. The camera’s Intelligent IS system selects the optimum optical Image Stabilizer mode from seven options to reduce camera shake and blur.
7.5cm (3.0”) PureColor II G LCD screen
The PowerShot G15’s LCD screen has 920,000 dots giving a clear and sharp view on images either when shooting or in playback mode. It includes a real time histogram display so you can easily view conditions and alter your shooting settings if required. The screen can be viewed in differing light conditions by setting it to one of five levels of brightness.
