The PowerShot G1 X’s large Canon CMOS sensor measures 18.7x14mm (4:3 aspect ratio) and has a similar height to a Canon EOS DSLR APS-C sensor. When combined with the DIGIC 5 image processor it produces stunning DSLR-like full resolution image quality up to ISO 12,800.
The large CMOS sensor size (approximately 6.3 times larger than the sensor in any previous comparable Canon PowerShot G-series compacts) allows photographers greater control over depth-of-field so you can isolate your subject from the background. The high resolution of the sensor also allows you to see more detail in images and gives the ability to crop images and still be able to print at large sizes.
The DIGIC 5 processor in the G1 X can process six times the amount of information compared to the DIGIC 4 processor used in any previous Canon G-series compacts. With this vastly increased processing power advanced noise reduction is possible to provide even better image quality than the DIGIC 4-powered HS System.
High ISO allows you to shoot confidently in low light without the use of flash, to shoot without the need for a tripod and, if flash is used, the flash range will reach further. The camera’s high ISO also allows photographers to achieve faster shutter speeds (up to 1/4000sec) to freeze the movement of subjects and achieve blur-free images. ISO selection is available in 1/3-stop increments and you can also select the highest ISO you wish the camera to use in ISO Auto mode (up to ISO 1600). Photographers can also control the amount of noise reduction that’s applied to output JPEGs via low, standard or high settings.
The precision 4x (28-112mm) zoom lens is a completely new lens that’s been designed to combine perfectly with the new large sensor for high resolution and high image quality. The lens’ 4x zoom focal range makes it ideal for a wide range of shooting conditions and its 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer means photographers can shoot at a shutter speed four stops lower than would otherwise be necessary for sharp results.
The PowerShot G1 X is able to shoot 14-bit RAW format image files that, coupled with the large sensor, deliver high dynamic range images with the ability to post-process the files to correct exposure and a range of image parameters. RAW shooting integrates with the Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software that is supplied with the camera to fit seamlessly into a photographer’s workflow.
The PowerShot G1 X has a 7.5cm (3.0”) vari-angle PureColor II VA LCD (920k-dot) screen that gives a clear and detailed view of the subject and allows for comfortable shooting from a range of angles.
The PowerShot G1 X features a compact, rugged metal body with a stainless steel chassis along with an optical viewfinder (OVF) that lets photographers shoot confidently and in their own style. The optical viewfinder is a real-image OVF with dioptre adjustment to allow for viewfinder clarity for differing types of eyesight.
Photographers can take full manual control of the G1 X with the dedicated exposure compensation dial, or the front and rear control dials that can be used to adjust shooting settings such as aperture, shutter speed, zoom (Front Dial only), and white balance.
The PowerShot G1 X features a dedicated Movie Record button to begin instant recording of superb Full HD 1080p movies with optical zoom and stereo sound. The camera’s large sensor helps for shooting movies as it allows better low light performance and shallow depth-of-field capabilities. You can enjoy high quality playback of footage on an HDTV via the camera’s HDMI terminal. An iFrame (720p) movie format is also available for fast editing of footage on Apple devices.
The PowerShot G1 X can capture split second action at 4.5 frames per second (fps) in a six-frame full resolution burst using its High-speed Burst HQ mode. A Handheld Night Scene mode is available, for shooting in very dark conditions without a tripod – it captures a high-speed sequence of shots and combines the data to produce one well-exposed image with minimal blur.
For the option to use the PowerShot G1 X simply, the Smart Auto mode automatically selects camera settings from 32 scenes to deliver optimum results. Multi-area White Balance correction compensates for multiple light sources in the same scene for natural images.
A High Dynamic Range mode takes multiple exposures of a scene and then combines them in-camera to deliver rich detail in shadow and highlight areas. The camera’s built-in 3-stop ND filter lets you use longer shutter speeds or wider apertures in bright light.
The PowerShot G1X has a number of additional features, including Multi-Aspect Shooting, so photographers can choose the composition and results they desire straight from the camera without the need to post-process. Exposures can be fine tuned with +/-3 stops of exposure compensation that can be manually set in 1/3-stop increments. For creative shooting a variety of Creative Filters allow photographers to select from a number of effects: Fisheye Effect, Miniature Effect (for either stills or movies), Super Vivid, Poster Effect, Toy Camera Effect and Monochrome.
The PowerShot G1 X can be used with many Canon EOS System accessories including the Speedlite EX flashguns that fit onto the camera’s hotshoe to offer creative flash possibilities. The MLA-DC1 Macro Lite adapter allows you to use Canon’s MR-14EX or MT-24EX macro flash units for close-up flash possibilities. Compatibility with 58mm filters is available by using the FA-DC58C Lens Filter Adapter.
A specially designed underwater housing case – the Waterproof Case WP-DC44 – allows you to have full control of the G1 X for shooting in heavy rain or for underwater shooting down to a maximum depth of 40m.
Large Canon CMOS sensor
Measuring 18.7x14mm (4:3 aspect ratio) the CMOS sensor in the PowerShot G1 X has a similar height to a Canon EOS APS-C sized sensor. It is the largest sensor ever seen in a PowerShot compact at approximately 6.3 times the size of the sensor seen in the acclaimed PowerShot G12 compact.
The sensor’s light-sensitive area per pixel is approximately 4.5 times larger than in the previous PowerShot G-series flagship camera, the G12, making it possible to capture 4.5 times more light than before. The larger capacity sensor provides higher light sensitivity, an expanded dynamic range at both low and high ISOs (up to 12,800), and a better signal-to-noise ratio. A 4-channel readout provides high-speed image capture for fast, responsive performance in all conditions.
DIGIC 5 processor
The high performance DIGIC 5 processor found in the G1 X can process six times the amount of information compared to the DIGIC 4 processor found in any previous Canon G-series compact. With more processing power the DIGIC 5 processor is able to perform more complex image processing, and advanced noise reduction, to provide even better image quality than the DIGIC 4-powered HS System.
By combining the large sensor with the DIGIC 5 image processor the HS System in the Powershot G1 X offers excellent low light performance with a maximum full-resolution ISO range of ISO 100 to 12,800; a level never been seen before in a Canon compact camera. By fully drawing out the power of the PowerShot G1 X’s large format sensor and high performance DIGIC 5 processor colour information at high ISOs is consistently preserved, with high detail, for beautifully crisp images.
4x optical zoom lens
Developed using the same design, manufacturing and quality processes as Canon’s world-renowned EF lens range, the lens in the PowerShot G1 X is built to achieve professional levels of image quality. The new lens has been expertly engineered to achieve a 4x optical zoom and a 28mm wide-angle view, whilst still retracting into the PowerShot G1 X’s body for complete convenience and an incredibly compact footprint.
To achieve a compact size and pin-sharp clarity, the PowerShot G1 X’s lens is constructed using Ultra high refractive index Aspherical (UA) lens elements, while glass molding technology is used during the manufacturing process to ensure the lenses are developed to Canon’s precise quality standards.
To effectively combat blur throughout the zoom range Canon’s 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer allows for handheld shooting at much slower shutter speeds than would usually be necessary to obtain a blur-free shot. The camera’s Intelligent IS system selects the optimum optical Image Stabilizer mode from seven options to reduce camera shake and blur.
7.5cm (3.0”) vari-angle PureColor II VA LCD screen
The PowerShot G1 X’s LCD screen has 920,000 dots, giving a clear and sharp view on images either when shooting or in playback mode. It includes a real time histogram display so you can easily view conditions and alter your shooting settings if required. The screen can be viewed in differing light conditions by setting it to one of five levels of brightness. The screen can be rotated through 175 degrees for easy viewing and discreet shooting at awkward angles and from many different positions.
14-bit RAW shooting, simultaneous RAW+JPEG shooting
Many professionals prefer to shoot in RAW mode rather than shooting JPEGs. The PowerShot G1 X features 14-bit RAW recording so that you can obtain the highest quality images possible from the camera and integrate the G1 X easily into your RAW image workflow. The G1 X also offers the option to shoot RAW+JPEG images simultaneously so photographers can either review and use JPEGs quickly or use RAW files for any detailed post-processing corrections or to produce large prints.
