G1 X Mark II: DSLR-like performance with PowerShot portability

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II Enhanced Grip Edition1 is Canon’s flagship professional compact camera, featuring a large 1.5-type Canon CMOS sensor, a super-wide 24mm 5x f/2.0-3.9 zoom, 31-point AiAF, Dual Control Rings and a 7.5cm (3.0”) LCD with touch-screen control plus WiFi with Remote Shooting function and Image Sync.

Who is it for?

With a large 1.5-type CMOS sensor, fast f/2.0 lens, DIGIC 6 processing and a high maximum ISO of 12,800 delivering 12.8 MP2 images with superb quality in all lighting conditions – the PowerShot G1 X Mark II will appeal to professional photographers as well as serious amateurs who want complete creative control over their picture taking and movie making.

An optional Electronic Viewfinder (EVF-DC1) further enhances the PowerShot G1 X Mark II’s usability by providing traditional handling while a totally re-engineered zoom lens featuring a 9-blade aperture offers better creative control with an improved 5cm minimum focusing distance for superb macro shots. A raft of customisable options makes this flagship PowerShot the most complete Canon compact ever.

  • Large 1.5-type Canon CMOS sensor.
  • 12.8 Megapixel images (3:2) and multi-aspect shooting2.
  • Fast f/2 aperture and a maximum ISO 12,800.
  • Ultra-wide 24mm, 5x zoom lens.
  • DIGIC 6 processing and Intelligent IS.
  • 31-point AiAF and MF Peaking.
  • Dual Control Rings and touch-screen operation.
  • WiFi with remote shooting and Image Sync.
  • Optional electronic viewfinder.
  • 14-bit RAW.

1 Enhanced Grip Edition available in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

2 Multi-aspect Sensor captures 12.8 MP images at 3:2 ratio with default settings. 13.1 MP images at 4:3 aspect ratio can be captured with the same effective focal length.

To make it easy to shoot, share and back up, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II introduces new WiFi features. These include in-built NFC for easy initiation when pairing with NFC-ready devices simply by touching devices together. Users simply transfer images onto their smartphones, and then use its cellular data to upload and share pictures from almost anywhere. Wireless connectivity allows users to control the PowerShot G1 X Mark II remotely by installing the Canon CameraWindow app on a smart device – ideal for shooting wildlife or taking group shots.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II features two customisable control rings, located conveniently around the camera’s lens barrel, which can be used to adjust settings while shooting. One ring turns continuously – ideal for adjusting focus manually – while the other rotates incrementally for stepped adjustments of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Other frequently used functions can be added to a custom menu for quick access. A large grip allows excellent handling while on the move or in challenging situations.

An optional Electronic Viewfinder EVF-DC1 slots into the PowerShot G1 X Mark II’s accessory hotshoe to offer traditional handling and composition. XGA resolution with 2.36 million dots and a quick refresh rate make shooting natural and enjoyable. A proximity sensor detects when the viewfinder is raised to the eye and the EVF can be pivoted through 90 degrees for low-angle or waist-level shooting.

Click on the window above to view sample movie footage shot with the PowerShot G1 X Mark II1.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II includes a variety of improved movie features so filmmakers can record smooth Full HD movies at 30fps in stereo with optical zoom in the MP4 format, select Focus Peaking (to aid manual focusing before filming begins), utilise in-camera Movie Transcoding and deploy a wind cut filter.

Integrated WiFi connectivity in the PowerShot G1 X Mark II lets you connect easily with home wireless networks, compatible printers and PCs, plus smart devices for easy online sharing and GPS tagging of your images with shooting locations. You can also print wirelessly with the PowerShot G1 X Mark II when using PictBridge wireless LAN compatible printers and compatible Canon PIXMA and SELPHY WiFi-enabled printers.

Using a compatible smart device and the Canon CameraWindow app, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II can be controlled from up to 5m away and images captured with a single tap. A live image is displayed on the screen of the smartphone or tablet – great for group shots featuring the photographer, or wildlife pictures of an easily disturbed object.

Image Sync enables easy and convenient back up of images to cloud storage or your PC. It has the intelligence to detect the optimum link for image back-up via a wireless network or PC with internet access. Once images are transferred on to either CANON iMAGE GATEWAY, Flickr™ or your computer, they will automatically synchronise without any user input.

Using the increased processing power of the DIGIC 6 processor the PowerShot G1 X Mark II’s Star Mode lets you capture stunning starry nightscapes with ease. Star Mode offers a choice of three shooting settings: ‘Star Nightscape’ shoots landscapes against starry skies; ‘Star Trails’ captures the movement of the stars by combining multiple images into a single composite image; and ‘Star Time-Lapse Movie’ combines still images, taken at set time intervals over a long period, to create stunning movies.

The enhanced Star Mode now features a new ‘Star Portrait’ option which allows users to capture perfectly-exposed pictures of subjects under a starry sky.

HDR Mode lets photographers capture the dark shadows and bright highlights of a high contrast scene. Thanks to the speed of DIGIC 6, you can achieve HDR without using a tripod or fixing the camera on a steady surface. It captures a fast continuous sequence of shots, and then combines the data into a single file with the least possible blur and best possible exposure, for images closer to how you saw them. You can then also choose from five different finishing effects: Natural, Art Bold, Art Standard, Art Vivid and Art Embossed.

1 Please note: Video playback quality depends on your connection speed.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II features a compact, versatile 5x zoom lens covering focal lengths equivalent to 24-120mm on a full-frame DSLR. A wide f/2.0-3.9 maximum aperture helps photographers work in low-light conditions and produce shallow depth-of-field that emphasizes subjects against blurred backgrounds. A nine-blade aperture further helps to render smooth out-of-focus areas with pleasing bokeh, favoured particularly for creative portraits.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II’s zoom lens focuses down to 5cm (compared to 20cm on the previous G1 X), allowing stunning close-up photography of macro subjects.

The DIGIC 6 processor delivers faster performance, improved image quality and new features. Image processing is up to 2.4x faster than DIGIC 5 and renders images with more detail especially when shooting at high ISO settings.

With the PowerShot G1 X Mark II photographers can now take advantage of features like Background Defocus, Star Mode, hand-held HDR and Multi-area White Balance. Also improving the responsiveness of the camera with a 56% reduction in overall shooting lag, it offers fast sustained continuous shooting and enables features like Background Defocus and handheld HDR.

The power of DIGIC 6 also allows the PowerShot G1 X Mark II to record Full HD 1920 x 1080 30p movies with stereo sound, making it perfect for enthusiasts shooting both stills and videos.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II’s large 1.5-type sensor features Canon CMOS technology for superb image quality, particularly in low-light conditions. Bigger pixels offer increased dynamic range, so images contain extra detail in bright highlights and dark shadows. A larger sensor also means better control over depth-of-field, enabling shallow-focus effects that emphasise a pin-sharp subject against a soft blurred background.

The new sensor configuration means that it can adapt and use the full width of the lens image circle, whether capturing images in default 3:2 ratio at 12.8 Megapixel or 4:3 ratio at 13.1 Megapixel, allowing creative composition and easy integration with existing DSLR editing processes. Capture either 12.8 MP images at 3:2 or 13.1 MP images at 4:3 aspect ratios with the same effective focal length.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II uses a newly developed 31-point AiAF system with a wider coverage of AF points across the frame compared to the PowerShot G1 X’s nine. The use of smaller AF points, grouped together more densely, increases focus accuracy and allows the photographer to confidently create images with a shallow depth-of-field. Focus can be adjusted manually using one of the camera’s two Lens Control Rings. To help you when focusing manually, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II highlights areas that are sharpest using a colour of your choice – a feature known as Manual Focus Peaking.
