With a highly impressive spec, expert level control over settings and a robust dust-proof and drip-proof body, the PowerShot G3 X is truly the superzoom powerhouse in Canon’s G-series range of compacts.

Who is it for?

With its impressive 24-600mm*, f/2.8-5.6, 25x optical zoom lens, large 1.0-type sensor and full manual control over a host of creative features, the PowerShot G3 X will appeal to a wide range of enthusiast photographers and filmmakers who want a compact and highly portable superzoom camera that combines complete control and creative flexibility with outstanding image quality in stills and movies.

The tremendous focal length range of the zoom lens, combined with the performance of the 1.0-type sensor, allows users to capture a wide array of subjects in superb detail; from faraway subjects, like sports and wildlife, at the telephoto end of the zoom to shooting wide-angle landscapes in low light to creative portraiture with strong bokeh at the wide-angle end of the lens.

  • HDMI live output. Support for external microphone and headphones.
  • Dust-proof and drip-proof body.
  • Creative Filters, Star Mode, Creative Shot Mode and Background Defocus.
  • Compatible with optional accessories including a high-resolution electronic viewfinder and EOS Speedlite flashguns.

* Note: 24-600mm focal length range is 35mm equivalent.

The PowerShot G3 X’s 25x optical zoom offers an astonishingly wide focal length range of 24-600mm to provide outstanding shooting flexibility with a super-telephoto reach that can capture distant subjects in exquisite detail. The 24mm wide-angle end of the focal length range allows users to include more of the subject in the frame; particularly useful in confined areas or when shooting indoors and also offering greater creativity in landscape photography, when the inclusion of foreground detail can be advantageous for more effective compositions.

The wide maximum aperture range (f/2.8-5.6) of the 25x lens allows the camera to shoot with faster shutter speeds in low-light and also gives more flexibility for strong background blur effects. A 9-blade aperture provides an 'almost circular' iris, which is critical for rendering point sources of light in a circular manner to allow for images with beautiful background blur.

The back-illuminated CMOS sensor of the PowerShot G3 X has a surface area that’s approximately 2.8x larger than the 1/1.7-type sensor in earlier PowerShot cameras, such as the G16. A larger sensor can accommodate larger pixels, which are more sensitive to light and yield less digital noise (especially at higher ISOs), making them ideal for capturing scenes in challenging low-light situations. Larger pixels also allow a wider dynamic range, meaning more detail can be captured and retained in highlights and shadow areas.

Canon’s innovative HS System has been designed to allow users to shoot in difficult lighting conditions and still obtain high-quality results. The system is a unique combination of a Canon DIGIC 6 processor and a high-sensitivity CMOS sensor, which gives superior results in a wide range of situations, producing results with higher dynamic range, low noise levels and realistic colours.

The PowerShot G3 X can capture action in stunning Full HD in a choice of variable frame rates (24p, 25p, 30p, 50p and 60p), allowing different expressions in movies; from cinematic to realistic.

An advanced Dynamic Image Stabilizer provides superior stabilisation over 5 axes even during filming while walking, running or in a moving vehicle. Intelligent IS, the camera’s image stablisation system, can adapt to eight different scenes – Normal IS, Panning IS, Macro IS, Advanced 5-axis Dynamic IS, Powered IS, Dynamic & Macro IS, Tripod Mode and Active Tripod Mode – to provide better stills and video quality than conventional IS systems.

The PowerShot G3 X boasts a Manual mode for movies, which is similar to the Manual mode for stills in allowing users to enhance and expand their creativity. Scenes can be captured with control over depth-of-field thanks to aperture control while shutter speed control allows filmmakers to adjust the flow of fast or slow moving action.

The PowerShot G3 X features a customisable smooth control ring on the lens, which offers DSLR levels of handling and performance, giving intuitive control over parameters such as manual focus and aperture setting.

Quick access to additional controls and settings is made even easier with the camera’s dedicated exposure compensation dial, Front Dial, a customisable touch interface on the LCD menu and two customisable shortcut buttons.

The large 8.0cm (3.2”), 1.62 million dot, tiltable LCD touch screen employs Touch AF technology, enabling accurate and smooth focus pull in movies. The screen’s useful tiltable feature allows the camera to be used for shooting in unusual ways, such as lower angles. The touch screen uses capacitive technology, allowing users to use multi-touch gestures such as pinching to extend its usability.

The camera is both dust-proof and drip-proof and will operate in challenging weather conditions, whilst the fast autofocus system and up to 5.9fps sustained continuous shooting allow you to capture more of the action.

The PowerShot G3 X also features an impressive range of creative shooting modes including a choice from seven different Creative Filters, Star Mode, Creative Shot Mode and Background Defocus Mode to achieve beautiful, SLR-style background blur. A built-in 3-stop ND filter extends the camera’s creative options even in bright sunlight, allowing the user to still shoot with slower shutter speeds.

For DSLR-like handling you can also attach the Canon EVF-DC1 high-resolution electronic viewfinder or you can push your creativity further and manipulate lighting with the compatible Canon Speedlite flashguns and lens filters.

Users can create fun and snappy videos with the Short Clip movie and Story Highlights features of the camera. Sharing your images and stories is simple as you can quickly transfer images and movies to smartphones or tablets using WiFi and the Dynamic NFC feature of the camera. With Dynamic NFC you can also easily and wirelessly transfer images and movies to a Canon Connect Station and enjoy your favourite shots on an HDTV.

It’s also easy to include yourself in group shots or to shoot wildlife photos, with full manual remote control of your camera from your smartphone or tablet. Backing up your precious new images wirelessly from anywhere to the cloud can be done using Image Sync and these can also be synchronised to your personal computer and smartphone.

The advanced 5-axis Dynamic Image Stabilizer compensates for very strong movements caused when walking, travelling in a car or even when running. This helps to produce super steady, Full HD movie footage that looks cinematically smooth when viewed on a large screen.

The inclusion of Dynamic NFC simplifies connectivity from the PowerShot G3 X to compatible smartphones, tablets and the Canon Connect Station. Simply tap your camera to your device to establish a wireless connection.

The Canon Connect Station is the easiest way to keep all your photos and movies in one place for enjoying them with friends and family on an HD TV. Touch your Canon Dynamic NFC-enabled camera to transfer your images wirelessly or import files using an SD card or USB cable. You can also use it to easily share your photos and movies with the world on social media and online albums like irista.
