This is a fast and light (765g) telephoto lens that is easy to use and easy to carry. The f/2.8 maximum aperture makes this lens good in low light without adding extra weight that would make it too heavy to carry around all the time. It also allows fine control over depth-of-field – this is especially useful when using the lens for shooting portraits.
It also features a USM focus motor and a rear-focusing system so that the lens does not change length during focusing. The lens also incorporates two ultra-low dispersion (UD) lens elements to thoroughly eliminate secondary spectrum and provide sharp, high contrast images.
The lens can also be used with either the Canon EF1.4x II or EF2x II extenders to provide you with a 280mm f/4 or a 400mm f/5.6 lens.
- USM autofocus
A ring-type USM autofocus motor means you can focus quickly, near-silently and with precision. It also provides full-time manual focus so that you can adjust the focus with the focus ring, without first having to switch the lens to manual focus. This allows you to adjust the focus accurately to ensure it is exactly where you want it to be for the most creative control possible.
