EF300mm f/4L IS USM – a lightweight all-rounder
The Canon EF300mm f/4L IS USM is a true ‘all-rounder’ lens. This L series telephoto is capable of producing exceptional images but remains light enough to carry all the time.
Who is it for?
With its compressed perspective and telephoto effect, the EF300mm f/4L IS USM lens can make your subjects stand out from their backgrounds. This lens finds favour with a variety of photographic subjects - from portraits at a distance to sports and wildlife. It is also especially useful for photographers who travel and carry their kit long distances.
- Focal length and maximum aperture: 300mm, 1:4
- Lens construction: 15 elements in 11 groups
- Diagonal angle of view: 8°15'
- Focus adjustment: Rear-focusing system with USM
- Closest focusing distance: 1.5m/4.9ft
- Filter size: 77mm
A fixed f/4 aperture provides good performance in low light conditions without making the lens unduly heavy to carry. Combined with the compact construction it is easy for travelling photographers to fit it in their bag and have it with them at all times.
Featuring an Image Stabilizer that provides the equivalent of three stops of shutter speed, it makes hand holding possible when the light levels start to fall. The two Image Stabilizer modes allow you to shoot both static subjects (Mode 1) and moving subjects (Mode 2) and still achieve sharp images.
The magnesium alloy lens body keeps the weight down and, in combination with the L series weather sealing, it creates a lens ready to survive the rigours of life with a professional photographer on the move.
You’ll also often find this lens attached to an extension tube – either the EF12 II or EF25 II – to achieve even closer focusing. In this way, it can be successfully used for ‘pseudo-macro’ photography of shy subjects like butterflies and larger insects.
The lens can also be used with either the EF1.4x II or EF2x II extenders to provide a 420mm f/5.6 or 600mm f/8 lens.
- USM autofocus
A ring-type USM autofocus motor means that you can focus quickly, near-silently and with precision. It also provides full-time manual focus so that you can adjust the focus with the focus ring, without first having to switch the lens to manual focus. This allows you to adjust the focus accurately to ensure it is exactly where you want it to be for the most creative control possible.
- UD lens elements
The use of two UD lens elements helps to completely eliminate and signs of secondary spectrum and thereby improves the quality of your images.
