EF400mm f/2.8L IS USM – a sports photographer’s dream
With the entry focal length required to be considered a ‘super-telephoto’ lens the Canon EF400mm f/2.8L IS USM offers an f/2.8 fixed aperture, plus a two stop Image Stabilizer, and is much more than the sum of its parts.
Who is it for?
This is the lens that every sports photographer wants to own. No matter what sport you shoot, the EF400mm f/2.8L IS USM lens will help you to get the shots. From ice-skating to rugby, football, horse racing and motor sports. But it's not just for sports - it can also be used for fashion photography, especially indoors or in low light, and for shooting wildlife.
- Focal length and max. aperture: 400mm, 1:2.8
- Lens construction (elements/groups): 17/13
- Diagonal angle of view: 6°10'
- Focus adjustment: Inner focusing system with USM
- Closest focusing distance: 3m/9.8ft
- Filter diameter: 52mm, rear drop-in
The focal length is long enough to help you fill the frame with your subject, and the large maximum aperture means that you can continue to shoot with a reasonable shutter speed even in low light situations, such as at indoor sports events. The two Image Stabilizer modes will also help to produce sharp images whether you are panning with a moving subject or shooting it when stationary.
When shooting Formula 1 action, for example, the ring-type USM autofocus motor and improved focusing algorithms allow you to keep a track of even the fastest moving cars. The addition of AF stop buttons means that you can keep the focus on the subject by momentarily stopping the AF when an obstruction cuts between you and the subject, and the focus preset ability allows you to jump to a specific focus distance instantly.
One USM autofocus element and two ultra-low dispersion (UD) glass elements ensure the highest image quality by effectively focusing the light rays at a single point to control secondary spectrum and chromatic aberration.
The lens has also improved dust and moisture resistance to help it to function in even the harshest of environments. These seals are especially effective when attached to the any of the professional EOS-1 series cameras.
The lens can also be used with either the Canon EF1.4x II or EF2x II extenders to provide a 560mm f/4 or 800mm f/5.6 lens.
- USM autofocus
A ring-type USM autofocus motor means you can focus quickly, near-silently and with precision. It also provides full-time manual focus so that you can adjust the focus with the focus ring, without first having to switch the lens to manual focus. This allows you to adjust the focus accurately to ensure it is exactly where you want it to be for the most creative control possible.
- Fluorite and UD elements
The use of one fluorite and two UD lens elements helps to completely eliminate any signs of secondary spectrum and thereby improves the image quality by providing high contrast and high resolution.
