EF600mm f/4L IS USM – a sports and wildlife behemoth to get you closer to the action
A behemoth of a lens that will really get you closer to the action, the Canon EF600mm f/4L IS USM is the third longest focal length lenses in the current EF lens range. It allows you to fill the frame with almost any wildlife subject no matter how wary it might be, or with a footballer at the opposite end of the pitch, or a racing car cornering flat out.
Who is it for?
For sports and wildlife photographers needing more reach than the EF500mm f/4L IS USM, this lens is great when your subjects are further away or when you can’t get closer to them due to barriers or safety constraints.
Key features
- Diagonal angle of view: 4° 10'
- Lens construction (elements/groups): 17/13
- Closest focusing distance: 5.5m/18ft
- Focus adjustment: Inner focusing system with USM
- Filter diameter: 52mm, rear drop-in
If you need to get close to the action but you can’t because it’s not safe, then the reach of the EF600mm f/4L IS USM will put you in the thick of it. The fast f/4 maximum aperture also ensures the lens strikes the best balance between portability and low light performance.
Equipped with a USM focus motor and AF stop buttons, with this lens you can track a moving subject with ease and stop the AF function momentarily should an obstruction pass between you and the main subject. Using these in combination with the Image Stabilization feature helps you to produce sharp images of both static and moving subjects with ease.
Even if the weather takes a turn for the worse while you’re out shooting, there is no need to pack up and go home. The magnesium alloy body not only keeps the lens as light as possible, but along with the full weather sealing it ensures that the lens continues working when the rains come down with a dust and rip proof construction which is at its most effective when mated to an EOS-1 series SLR body.
The lens can also be used with either the EF1.4x II or EF2x II extenders to provide a 840mm f/5.6 or 1200mm f/8 lens that will still perform autofocus at the central point when attached to an EOS-1 series SLR camera. The Image Stabilizer will also still function when the lens is attached to an extender.
- USM autofocus
A ring-type USM autofocus motor means you can focus quickly, near-silently and with precision. It also provides full-time manual focus so that you can adjust the focus with the focus ring, without first having to switch the lens to manual focus. This allows you to adjust the focus accurately to ensure it is exactly where you want it to be for the most creative control possible.
- Fluorite and UD lens elements
The inclusion of one fluorite element and two ultra-low dispersion (UD) lens elements ensures that you get the highest image quality by effectively suppressing secondary spectrum and chromatic aberration.
