EF24mm f/1.4L II USM – a low light star
The EF24mm f/1.4L II USM is a direct replacement for the previous version of this lens - the EF24mm f/1.4L USM. It takes the strengths of that lens and incorporates new technologies to take the optical performance to the next level.
Who is it for?
It’s fast, it’s wideangle and it’s tough! These qualities make the EF24mm f/1.4L II USM perfectly suited to a wide range of photographic situations from street photography to landscapes and interiors. The field of view is wider than the human eye and can be used to create a stronger sense of perspective.
Key features
- Wide 24mm focal length, f/1.4 aperture
- Aspherical and UD lens elements
- SubWavelength structure Coating
- USM autofocus motor with full-time manual focus
- Floating internal focus mechanism
- Weather and dust seals
- Robust build quality
The inclusion of two aspherical elements controls distortion and field curvature, and two Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) lens elements help to minimise the chromatic aberrations that are common in many wideangle lenses.
A new Sub Wavelength structure Coating (SWC) on the lens helps to minimise the ghosting and flare that’s often associated with internal reflections off a digital camera’s sensor, to provide bright, crisp images.
The fast USM autofocus and full-time manual focus make this lens usable in all situations. The focus is near silent and the floating internal focus system delivers high image quality throughout the focal range. A non-rotating front filter mount ensures it is easy to use with filters for more creative effects.
As befitting a Canon L series lens, the construction is robust and weather and dust seals provide additional protection. In keeping with environmental ethics, only lead free glass is used in the construction.
A high quality, fast prime lens will open up new photographic opportunities that where previously unavailable to you. In low light, the f/1.4 maximum aperture means you can take advantage of what ambient light there is, and in bright light, you can use the aperture to have complete control over the depth-of-field in your image.
- SubWavelength structure Coating
Designed for use in digital photography, Canon’s patented lens element coating helps to minimise the ghosting and flare caused by internal reflection - helping to deliver crisp, clear images. The EF24mm f/1.4L II USM was the first Canon lens to ever feature the SubWavelength structure Coating. This coating acts like the surface of a moth’s eye to reduce reflection from the surface of the lens - it has the advantage of reducing both flare and ghosting to improve image quality.
