EF24mm f/2.8 IS USM: a wide-angle prime lens with Image Stabilizer and USM
Canon’s EF24mm f/2.8 IS USM lens gives a wide-angle view and, along with the EF28mm f/2.8 IS USM, is one of the first two wide-angle Canon prime lenses to ever feature Image Stabilization (IS) technology.
Who is it for?
The wide-angle focal length of the EF24mm f/2.8 IS USM lens opens up a wide range of shooting options. Suited to photojournalists and street photography, landscapes and interiors, it is a versatile lens that has a field-of-view wider than the human eye. Its compact size and lightweight also make it an ideal lens for travel photography. Used well it can create a strong sense of perspective in your images.

A 24mm focal length prime lens is one of the most versatile lenses available. It can be used to capture a wide-angle view, or you can get in close to the action and feel part of what is going on.
The f/2.8 maximum aperture always provides optimum control over depth-of-field and it also makes the lens great for shooting in low light so photographers are able to make the most of what ambient light may be available before needing to resort to using flash.
In a first for a Canon wide-angle prime lens, it features a 4-stop Image Stabilizer (IS) that will automatically detect panning and compensate accordingly. This allows the lens to be used in low light without having to raise the ISO setting on the camera. The Image Stabilization (IS) system also aids focusing in low light by presenting a static image to the focusing sensors within the camera body.
A close focusing distance of just 0.20m lets photographers get in close to their subjects and be part of the action, while still providing context to subjects with the wide-angle field of view.
At only 280g, the lens is lightweight and ideal for travelling photographers, where every gramme in the bag counts. A compact-sized lens, it will not draw unwanted attention when shooting in a crowd.
The lens’ optical design features an aspheric, Glass Mold (GMo) lens element to ensure sharp, high contrast images across the frame. A 7-blade circular aperture provides pleasing out of focus highlights and attractive bokeh that makes subjects stand out from backgrounds.
To ensure sharp, in-focus images, the lens is fitted with a ring-type USM autofocus motor for fast, silent focusing at all times. The addition of full-time manual focusing allows you to adjust focus manually without first having to switch to MF.
A ring-type USM autofocus motor means you can focus quickly, near-silently and with precision. It also provides full-time manual focus so that you can adjust the focus with the focus ring, without first having to switch the lens to manual focus. This allows you to adjust the focus accurately to ensure it is exactly where you want it to be for the most creative control possible.
For use with E-TTL II flash metering, this lens provides distance information back to the camera body to help to refine the flash metering algorithms and ensure accurate flash exposures.
Super Spectra coatings
The Super Spectra coatings achieve two benefits – they cut down internal flare and ghosting when light reflects off the digital sensor, providing images with improved contrast. The coatings are optimised for each lens design, thus ensuring there is accurate colour balance across the entire EF lens range so that all lenses have a uniform colour response.
