July 2014

The Canon Female Photojournalist Award for 2014, in association with Images-Evidence and supported by Elle Magazine, has been awarded to French photographer Viviane Dalles for her proposed project on teen mothers in the North of France.

The 2014 Canon Female Photojournalist Award jury – including Daphné Anglès (The New York Times), Andreïna de Bei (Sciences et Avenir), Barbara Clément (Elle Magazine), Cyril Drouhet (Le Figaro Magazine), Magdalena Herrera (GEO), Caroline Laurent-Simon (Elle Magazine) and Marc Simon (VSD) – chose to support Viviane Dalles in her upcoming project. Among the selection criteria were the presentation of the project, the quality of previous work (Dalles’ submission included her essay ‘Boxing Circus’; the lead image of this article is from that project), the journalistic thought processes and relevance of the chosen subject.

Viviane Dalles (above): winner of the 2014 Canon Female Photojournalist Award for a planned project on teen mothers in France.

At the beginning of 2005, following the tsunami, Viviane Dalles quit her job at the archives of Magnum Photos and bought a plane ticket to India to embark on a career as an independent documentary photographer. Her photographs – mainly from Europe, Asia and Australia – have been published in many international publications including GEO, Marie Claire, Brigitte, M Magazine, Le Figaro, Elle and Time magazine. Her photographic work has been exhibited in many countries including France, Australia, the United States, Nepal, Italy and the Netherlands.

Viviane Dalles explained: “The project I will realise with the Canon award is about the teen mothers in the North of France. They are born in one of the regions most affected by unemployment: La Thierache. However, their future is already planned: they are only just teenagers and they dream to become mothers as soon as possible. I will begin this photo essay in September [2014].”

The Award – along with a prize of €8000 from Canon – will be presented to Viviane Dalles during one of the evening screening events of the Professional Week (1-7 September) of the 2014 Visa pour l’Image international festival of photojournalism in Perpignan, France. The prize money provides the necessary funding for Viviane Dalles to complete the project within one year and the resulting work will then be showcased during the 2015 Visa pour l’Image festival, via an exhibition or screening.
