<description>Workers dig for diamonds in Matempu Mine near Mbuji Mayi, Congo. The mine is a private concession that belongs to local speculators who flock to this area from all over Congo in the hope of finding their fortune buried at the bottom of 20 meter deep holes dug into the soft earth. Local people say that 15 people on average die in this mine every month due to earth collapses and fights. Most of these miners live below the poverty benchmark of $1 per day. They frequently work for several months to dig holes deep enough to reach diamonds during which time they have no income.

Mbuji Mayi has a population variously estimated between 3.5 and 4.5 million inhabitants. It has an infrastructure built for 30,000. Most residents are migrant workers. The town has an unemployment rate of 85% according to the local mayor.
