Falklands fun with the EOS 7D Mark II

After my initial results testing a pre-production version of the new EOS 7D Mark II DSLR, I was allowed to take it with me on my trip down south to the southern ocean. My view was to test it alongside the EOS-1D X to see if it could do a good job if it's big brother was out of action for some reason. I treat my cameras very harshly; I don't put them down nicely or worry about what the weather conditions are, I just want to get the shot and the camera has to look after itself. So I took the EOS 7D Mark II out in all weathers and pushed it to the limit. The ultimate test for me though was a high action test – and there are few subjects more difficult on the planet than surfing gentoo penguins.

So, armed with an EF300mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens, I sat on a remote beach on the Falkland Islands with some clients from the trip on a beautiful sunny day. It looked like the Bahamas, I kid you not! The Falklands are really beautiful on days like these. In front of us groups of gentoo penguins were swimming around in the surf and as we watched one group formed up and headed straight into shore. The water was crystal clear and we could see them twisting and turning under the waves... then just as they reached shore several leapt into the air and we all burst out laughing.

And that was pretty much how the day went. The sun continued to shine, groups of penguins came and went and we laughed. Penguins really do that to you. Of course you want to know about the EOS 7D Mark II, right? Well it did great; I set the Tracking Sensitivity and Accel/Decel to settings I knew would work and just panned, following the penguins underwater. The trick was to get them on one side of the viewfinder so that they jumped into clear space but this was easier said than done. I swapped all day between the EOS-1D X and the EOS 7D Mark II, not really noticing when I did so. Here are some of the 7D Mark II results. A nice bunch of fun penguin images to make you smile on a dark winter's night...
