Saturday 4pm, Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, two teams and a lot at stake in the biggest derby in the Spanish football league – Real Madrid vs. Atlético Madrid. The time has come: I can finally move from testing to field work, never better, with the new EOS-1D X Mark II.

Some think that the improvements to the camera may seem minor. The fact is that after a few days of testing, and especially after this match, I can say that the EOS-1D X Mark II has far exceeded all my expectations.

To check the evolution and performance of the camera first-hand, I decided to compare, in equal conditions, the new EOS-1D X Mark II with its predecessor the EOS-1D X, both equipped with the EF400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens and the EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. Half time each.

A full 90 intense minutes of work was more than enough to check a few things: the metering system of the new EOS-1D X Mark II is excellent; the AF response time is much faster and there are major improvements to ISO.

As for the metering, during the match the light was constantly changing. I adjusted my shutter speed and aperture to manual mode and trusted automatic ISO to concentrate on capturing the action; the result was perfect.

Regarding the new autofocus system, I had already seen the improvement in tracking and speed-servo AF in previous days, but this match also showed that performance in strong backlight situations is very good. It all related to the increase in frames-per-second which allowed me more images to choose from for decisive moments.

Regarding the improvement of ISO, high ISO results are even better than its predecessor which is already good. What also surprised me was the quality and sharpness with low ISO under strong and bright lights.

Another thing that surprised me is the quality of the jpeg files produced by the camera. They are almost ready to use which is fundamental for me, because I need to send photos of the match to my clients quickly. Even slightly underexposed pictures can be corrected without noise appearing in the shadows.

At the end of the match, the soccer derby was won by the minimum by Atletico Madrid, but the photographic derby, despite EOS-1D X being a worthy rival, was clearly won by the EOS-1D X Mark II.
