Only a photographer?

After a few months of using the EOS-1D X Mark II in my daily work, many photographers have asked me: what about the camera? Is it good? Does it work well? For me the answer is clear: the improvement is in the AF and 14fps burst, but I also tell them about the remarkable advances in video. It has never been so easy to record videos with a Canon camera, thanks to AF tracking while recording, the touch screen and various video formats to 120fps and 4K. But some of them always answer me back the same: "I am not interested in that," and say flatly: "I am a photographer!" Of course I am also a photographer, but I have to admit that this new tool has facilitated and improved my way of working and it would be a shame to stop using one of the camera’s new and more important features. Of course, it also would mean losing a business opportunity.

At the time I had it in my hands I tested the new video recording features in a couple of Real Madrid training sessions and the results were spectacular. I passed some of those clips to the producers of the TV channel of the club and they were so fascinated by the quality of the images that they decided to use them to make the promos for the launch of their new channel in HD. Without being an expert in video recording (I am photographer) I could get excellent images. Shooting with an EF400mm f/2.8L IS II USM, the camera kept the focus in servo mode and using the touch screen I could select the subject to be followed.

Recently, Real Madrid won its eleventh European Champions League Cup and I was asked to make photos of the trophies in the club museum. It is a unique photo because there is no other club in the world with so many trophies under his belt. I used the EOS-1D X Mark II with EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, the EF8-15mm f/4L and EF70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM lens. I also recorded some clips for the TV channel. The results of recording 4k were just perfect. Recording clips at 120fps created a dramatic effect with the movement of confetti behind the glasses.

It is clear that there are limitations to the use of video because audiovisual rights of those who own the major media, especially in important sports events, but there are many others in which you can use the video function without problem. This can help us to complete our report and, at the same time, provide an extra to our customers. I repeat: it has never been so easy and simple to record video with a DSLR with quality results.

Without a shadow of doubt, I'm a photographer, and I always will be, but refusing innovation is refusing progress. Professionals have to adapt to our customer needs without fear in order to grow professionally. It is becoming more and more usual that that media use photo and video together all the time and, in this sense, Canon has given professionals a total tool.

I'm a photographer: my work is to focus on an exclusive image – which only I select, by intuition, experience or luck – to provide information, entertainment or excitement. And when I get it, I press the button. This way I have made hundreds of thousands of photos throughout my career. Now, with the same process, following the same steps, identically, I record a video. And I have not changed. I'm a photographer! And to be that I only need two things: apply the technique that I have acquired and put in the passion.
